The trees are important to our environment and have numerous functions. There are also many considerations to make when planting trees in your garden or even in creating a park. Once a tree is planted, then there is the maintenance and care.
To begin, let's look at the function of trees. Value they provide include:
1. Aesthetics. Trees are creatures of beauty and grandeur. They offer the beauty in every season, with their shape, bark, leaves, flowers, fruits, and sometimes smell. In addition to their seasonal variations, the change in size and character over time. Some trees are quite large and are beautiful just for their size, regardless of their species.
2. Architectural Elements. Trees serve as the structure of a landscape and form the walls and ceilings that create outdoor spaces. They can be used to formulate an opinion, serve as a focal point, the boundaries of form, act as a privacy screen, or create outdoor rooms. A particularly elegant example of an area architecture created by trees is formed by a double row (all) of vase-shaped trees (eg, American elm, American yellowwood). The meeting of the branches cross creates a space between the lines as that under a cathedral ceiling.
3. Noise Abatement and reduction. Trees reduce levels of noise, particulate traps, and absorbing carbon dioxide and gaseous pollutants. One hundred trees can remove five tons of carbon dioxide and 1000 pounds of particulates and pollutants gases in a year.
4. Shade and Wind Break. The shade of the trees, located on the south side of a house, can significantly cool a house in the summer with the estimates of 30 percent less air-conditioning bills compared to a house with no shade. In summer, the temperature under a tree can be 9 º F lower than that of an adjacent space and up to 25 ° below the air over asphalt in the vicinity. Intuitively we know the value of a shadow of a tree, when we seek the shade of a tree in desert, as an extension of a parking lot asphalt. Evergreen trees (deciduous or conifer), located on the northwest side of a house to act as a windbreak can save up to 20 percent on heating costs in winter.
5. Preventing erosion and runoff reduction. Tree canopies reduce the impact of raindrops on the soil and network of roots of a tree helps to keep soil in place.
6. Value. Research has shown that an attractive landscape can increase the value of a home by 5 percent to 11 percent (Behe et al., 2005).
7. Wildlife Habitat. Trees serve as shelter, nesting site, food, perch, and stay for many birds, mammals and insects.
8. Social and Emotional Value. Trees act as a link with nature, give a sense of wellbeing, and are often the site of social events such as picnics. Naturally most of children are lured by the sight of a good tree climbing and a swing rope as well.
If you are trying to plant trees in your garden, do your homework before starting the excavation work. Here are some considerations before you decide where to put your trees:
1. Height. Tree will bump into something when it is completely grown?
2. Canopy spread. Range will be as the tree grow?
3. Is the tree deciduous or coniferous? (Will it lose its leaves in winter?)
4. Shape or form. A columnar tree will grow in less space. Round and V-Shaped species provide more shade.
5. Growth rate. How long will it take for your tree to reach its height? A slow-growing species typically live longer than fast growing species.
6. Soil, sun and humidity.
7. Fruit. No one wants messy droppings on the sidewalks busy.
8. Hardiness zone indicates extreme temperatures, in which a tree can grow. Check with your community's tree board or forestry department or a local county cooperative extension agent for a list of trees suitable for planting in your area specific resistance.
