Freight Train $10.17 Freight Train, Alan Jackson’s 16th album, has none of the momentum of a locomotive but all of the reassuring sturdiness of a hulking piece of steel: this is music built for distance, not speed. Appropriately, not much on Freight Train moves all that fast — there is a bit of a skipping gait to the title track — and nothing hits that hard; it all rolls along comfortably, never pushing at the edges of Jackson’s comfort zone. More than ever, the singer sounds like part of the old guard, willfully ignoring anything modern or rocking, preferring to sing swaying ballads and pay tribute to Vern Gosdin via a cover of “Till the End.” As relaxed as this is, Jackson isn’t necessarily coasting — he wrote the lion’s share of the 12 songs here, choosing his four covers wisely — but his touch is so relaxed it sometimes it feels as if he is. Certainly, there’s a fair share of charm to Jackson’s cozy confidence, but Freight Train doesn’t offer a sustained romantic mood along the lines of 2006’s understated gem Like Red on a Rose. One could never say that the band didn’t have some of the best talent in bluegrass, or that the band didn’t expand the genre into new terrains. The duo’s format is straightforward, leaving the arrangements constant throughout: Klein sings lead and plays guitar, Gaudreau plays mandolin and sings harmony. The team tackle both traditional and fairly contemporary material, from “Shady Grove” to Tom Paxton’s “The Last Thing on My Mind” to Harvey Reid’s “Dreamer or Believer.” As a result, 2:10 Train sounds much closer to tradition than Chesapeake’s ’90s work on Sugar Hill. Still, Klein and Gaudreau’s work retains many of qualities that defined Chesapeake. Even with the stripped-down approach, rustic favorites like “Black Jack Davey” may strike some listeners as having the same disconnect with mountain soul as Chesapeake’s work. Everything is beautifully played and sung on 2:10 Train and will please fans of both players. Gravy Train [RVG Edition] $11.98 Gravy Train is a fine, if not quite exceptional record from Lou Donaldson’s initial soul-jazz phase of the early ’60s. Actually, given the title and the period in which it was recorded, the album isn’t quite as greasy and funky overall as one might expect; most of the repertoire is devoted to pop ballads and mid-tempo standards, the latter of which tends to bring out more of the bop elements in Donaldson’s playing. That’s not true for the entire album, though; the title cut is a laid-back, conga-tinged bluesy groover in the classic Donaldson mold, even if it’s a bit workmanlike. Donaldson’s longtime pianist, Herman Foster, is allotted quite a bit of solo space here, and he concentrates more on thick, rippling chords than single-note lines. For his part, Donaldson’s playing is pleasant, and the rest of the supporting group maintains a steady groove throughout. All of Donaldson’s sessions from this period (Here ‘Tis, The Natural Soul, Good Gracious) have enough worthwhile moments for devoted fans, and that’s true of Gravy Train as well, though casual fans probably won’t find it necessary enough to track down. Still, this is one delicious dish as it mashes together Italo-disco, pop-rap, tech-house, and the sound of Bad Boy in its prime, with an all-star guest list that goes from T.I. to Grace Jones. Train, The $12.71 The duo of director John Frankenheimer and actor Burt Lancaster again join forces with the latter starring as French railway inspector Labiche. With Allied forces closing in on occupied Paris, Herman Goering orders Col. Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield) to move the priceless art from the Jeu de Paume Museum to Germany by train. The museum’s curator, Mme. Villard (Suzanne Flon) tries to cajole Labiche into stopping the art train, but he’s far more concerned with blowing up a German armaments train. Meanwhile, Papa Boule (Michel Simon), an aged railwayman, uses the distraction of the Allied bombing of a nearby munitions train to burn out the engines of the train carrying the art, and is killed by the Nazis for his efforts. Hotelkeeper Christine (Jeanne Moreau), has managed to persuade Labiche of the importance of the art, and when the livid Waldheim orders him to drive the treasure-bearing train, he’s formulated a plan to foil the Nazi theft. He fabricates a series of interlocking ruses which lead the Germans to believe that the train has crossed into Germany, when, in reality, it’s simply going in circles around Paris. Lancaster leads an exceptional cast in this engrossing film, based on a true story.
