Blithely discarding large package then on Christmas morning and the discovery of a Toy Train set with must surely be a fond childhood memory of Many model train enthusiasts. His creation on the floor, with the help of Dad, of course, a couple of hours spent watching the locomotive and its parade of carriages and wagons circle oval track without end, its purpose and destination limited only by our imagination.

Fast forward 30 years and we decided it would be a pastime fun to enter. But this time we would take seriously.

We our eye and highly detailed miniature steam locomotive, with the coaches more. We sift the Internet to research information for the track better to buy and read on building baseboards, while aspiring to create a scenario that can compete, in miniature, all the man or mother nature can create.

More importantly we got the approval from our other half for the installation our dream layout in one part of the house which now become their own little sanctuary of the railway. The next step is a visit, or more, to our hobby shop preferred. We leave happy, wallet lighter and a little 'more in credit card debt.

For those of us fortunate enough to have a large loft size, garage or the spare room, which to pursue our major project, we have hundreds of layout piece of your choice, with myriad variations of each. Oh, the possibilities!

But if, like me, lives in a small apartment with 2 bedrooms and do not have the luxury of a 12 feet by 6 feet straight turns, small oval that 6'x3 'is not is going to keep that interest for long.

Enter the two-level double loop. This is exactly what I've created my 6'3 "x 3'6" layout in HO scale – The Sunny Model Railroad.

Consisting of two independent circuits, fed from separate transformers, the bottom ring is an irregular oval, with a dead short. The second layer is a highly modified dog bone, switchable to go right, even with a quick fitting. A single layer double ring would not fit for a layout of these dimensions, but this limitation has proved a blessing in disguise. Now I have a layout more complex and interesting especially for the levels of twice.

I created two separate galleries for the oval below: one for the mountain and another on the opposite side so that the passenger Train Steam is visible, perhaps only two thirds of the time because it winds around the track. To add realism, I can stop the train in a tunnel and delay its release to create the illusion that the train is traveling a much greater distance.

On the upper level, a freight train passes through its own tunnel in the mountain and then spent a signal-tower control with the possibility of some simple step on the siding.

Probably the best part of this system is that the trains are controlled independently – All without the help of Digital Command Control!

Because of the split-level, the center of the layout forms a valley meadow and here I'm constantly trying new ideas and themes, hoping to get really creative with my landscape. As it is, a farmer watching his flock of sheep grazing the daisies. A distance workers are at work building a small cottage. Farther still, the dazzling white quartz sand of a man-made beach overlooking a lake lined with water high-herbs awaits its visitors. All in all, a railroad model is a work in progress, which one hopes will never be done secretly.

After shedding a good dose of action on the train out of my limited space in HO scale, I can not help but think that if I had the chance to do all over again, N scale would be my choice. Oh, the possibilities!
