Medusa [Bonus Track] $24.79 The critics savaged Annie Lennox’s sophomore effort when it first came out, and it’s easy to see why: it’s not that an all-covers album was a bad idea, but she did pick some rather large shoes to fill and she did kind of run roughshod over the songs themselves, taking gritty material by the likes of Neil Young and the Clash and turning it into super-slick electro-pop ear candy. But on the other hand, candy sometimes really hits the spot, and Lennox’s rendition of “No More I Love You’s” by the ultra-obscure British pop band the Lover Speaks is ravishingly, heartbreakingly lovely. Those who have never heard the Clash’s original version of “Train in Vain” might not find her version as objectionable as the critics did, either. But there’s no arguing when it comes to her anemic take on the Al Green classic “Take Me to the River” or her equally numb rendition of Neil Young’s “Don’t Let It Bring You Down.” Those who have given up on looking cool, however, might find themselves able to enjoy her gentle arrangement of “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” Don’t pay full price for this, but snap it up if you find it in a bargain bin somewhere. Frizzle Fry [Bonus Track] $10.38 Primus’ eccentric, dissonant blend of avant-rock, funk, punk, and thrash has inspired comparisons to everyone from Frank Zappa to Devo to the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Ultimate Mancini [Bonus Track] $38.39 Henry Mancini was easily one of the greatest composers for film soundtracks, so putting together a collection of 17 songs nominated for various awards (Grammy, Golden Globe, or Academy Awards) was easy. But finding the proper mix of musicians was important. His daughter, Monica Mancini, is a talented singer in her own right, so she was an obvious choice. And it was only natural to invite tenor saxophonist Plas Johnson to reprise his most famous solo in “The Pink Panther Theme,” which he recorded with Mancini for the original soundtrack. For the most part, Mancini’s arrangements are utilized, but there are some twists. Stevie Wonder is featured on harmonica with the vocal group Take 6 in the pretty ballad “Moon River,” while organist Joey DeFrancesco shines in the breezy “Mr. Lucky.” But it is Monica Mancini who makes the biggest impression (along with her father’s music, of course). Her sensual rendition of “Moment to Moment,” and her lightly swinging duet with singer Kenny Rankin of “Dreamsville,” both of which are complemented by Tom Scott’s superb alto sax, make it apparent that she inherited her father’s musical genes. Among the several arrangements contributed by Patrick Williams, his gorgeous chart for Monica of “Dear Heart” features the singer backed mostly by George Doering’s sensitive acoustic guitar. As Donald Fagen of Steely Dan puts it in his brief note to the CD: “All bow before the High Priest of Hollywood Cool!” In other words, fans of Henry Mancini should snap up this rewarding CD right away. Fleshwounds [Bonus Track] $18.39 Skunk Anansie was never genre-bound. Freely incorporating towering metal mayhem, electronic darkness, elegiac, fluttery soul, and the barely contained force of vocalist Skin’s presence and politics, the band was forever flailing against the cage of convention. Skunk Anansie dissolved in 2001, and Skin took a hiatus from music. She has reemerged with Fleshwounds, an album of broken- (and open-) hearted love songs that, even if it doesn’t coil and snap like the most caustic of Skunk’s material, still crackles smartly with Skin’s copyrighted singularity. Drawing vocally on the vulnerability in Skunk Anansie’s earthier moments (“Infidelity [Only You]” or “Brazen [Weep],” both from 1996′s Stoosh), Skin here turns in a startlingly honest performance that suggests Roberta Flack fronting an urbanized version of Radiohead. “Listen to Yourself” and “Faithfulness” both run on a claustrophobic groove built from junkyard guitar and skittering anti-beats, while Skin sings beautifully over the top about issues not political, but intensely personal. It’s obvious that a relationship came and went during her post-Skunk break; Fleshwounds is written largely in the first person, and lines like “Love abuse is just a test/Then sad old love songs/Stick the knife in/Deeper everyday” don’t necessarily suggest a happy ending. But they’re cathartic, and delivered the way one would confide in a close friend, making the album not so dark as it might have been. (Ben Christophers’ warm piano flirting with the beats of tracks like “You’ve Made Your Bed” helps humanize, too.) If there’s a knock on Fleshwounds, it’s this constant convergence of the organic and electronic — some listeners might be put off by producer David Korsten’s preference for squelch and laptop squiggles, sounds that maybe aren’t as original as they once were. At the same time, “Don’t Let Me Down” features gentle acoustic guitar figures, an understated trap kit, and one of Skin’s most delicately raw vocal performances. Fleshwounds surely won’t please everyone, if only because of her previous group’s chronic schizophrenia. We Sweat Blood [Bonus Track] $11.18 All of the warning signs are right there on the cover: the band name in a jagged and stylized font, a close-up on someone playing an electric guitar, and dripping blood. Yeah, that’s right, this is a metal album. It was pretty clear on Born a Lion that Danko Jones was already heading in this direction, with loud boogie-soaked riffs that owed more to AC/DC than the revved-up funk that served as the bedrock of the group’s two early EPs. Not that you’d confuse We Sweat Blood for commercial-grade metal: there’s very little bombast and absolutely zero hand-wringing earnestness here. The production is incredibly crisp — instead of soaking everything in sight with reverb, most of the vocals are clean and the drums snap like whip cracks — and the performance is very clean, with no pointless wailing from either the vocals or guitars. Everything has been stripped back to the basics: sex, Satan, and super-high volume. Sure, the lyrics are so over the top in places that it’s almost like the band has become a cartoon: in the album opener, “Forget My Name,” “She makes me forget my name” is followed up by “I wanna, I wanna, I wanna burn in Hell with you.” Elsewhere, “Baby I want to put some mileage on your lovebike/I want you out on the road with my testosterone make you feel alright” is delivered with a straight face. There’s even a tribute to one of fellow Canadian Neil Young’s sillier lyrics. Deathless prose for the ages this ain’t, but it doesn’t really matter, because the groove is deep, the rock is hard, and those who aren’t shaking their hips will probably be resisting the urge to follow along on the ol’ air guitar. How My Heart Sings! [Bonus Track] $31.99 Recorded in May and June of 1962, at the same time as the Moonbeams sessions, How My Heart Sings shows a different side of the Bill Evans Trio than that all-ballads album. Here, the eight selections have a much more mid- and even up-tempo flair. Israel appears more comfortable in these settings to be sure, as he is the kind of bassist that relegates himself deeply into the rhythm section, sublimating himself to the pianist. In Evans’ own words, the band’s desire was to “provide a more singing sound” in this material. The set begins with a lyrical waltz in the title track. Evans himself comments in the liner notes that it “contains a delightful 4/4 interlude framed by a delightful 3/4 lyric line.” Nowhere does he discuss his solo that literally ripples in delicate waves off the middle register, and Motian’s stick work shimmies up the rhythm and allows it to truly dance and sing. There are a number of standards here, including “Summertime,” which sounds so different with its mid-tempo opening and Israel’s flaunting bass vamp in front of the piano. When Evans gets to the melody he is following the swinging skip of Motian’s drums, and he digs deep into inverting the melody line with a slew of arpeggios and short, choppy phrases. On Cole Porter’s “Everything I Love,” Evans takes the snap in the tune and breaks it, committing it to a driving swing and vaunting lyrical gem that has three seemingly unresolvable harmonic problems in the center that turn out to be a Moebius strip in Evan’s chromatic language. This is a tough recording; it flies in the face of the conventions Evans himself has set, and yet retrains the deep, nearly profound lyricism that was the pianist’s trademark.
