A group of collegiate American wrestlers encounter a cunning killer while riding the rails though Eastern Europe. When Alex (Thora Birch) and the athletes party so hard that they miss the train to Odessa, a kindly stranger suggests that they take an alternate route. With no other options, the hung-over group boards the next train and hopes for the best. But these weary travelers may never make it to their destination alive, because somewhere on that train lurks a ruthless killer, and tonight he’s out for blood. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

$12.71

The duo of director John Frankenheimer and actor Burt Lancaster again join forces with the latter starring as French railway inspector Labiche. With Allied forces closing in on occupied Paris, Herman Goering orders Col. Franz von Waldheim (Paul Scofield) to move the priceless art from the Jeu de Paume Museum to Germany by train. The museum’s curator, Mme. Villard (Suzanne Flon) tries to cajole Labiche into stopping the art train, but he’s far more concerned with blowing up a German armaments train. Meanwhile, Papa Boule (Michel Simon), an aged railwayman, uses the distraction of the Allied bombing of a nearby munitions train to burn out the engines of the train carrying the art, and is killed by the Nazis for his efforts. Hotelkeeper Christine (Jeanne Moreau), has managed to persuade Labiche of the importance of the art, and when the livid Waldheim orders him to drive the treasure-bearing train, he’s formulated a plan to foil the Nazi theft. He fabricates a series of interlocking ruses which lead the Germans to believe that the train has crossed into Germany, when, in reality, it’s simply going in circles around Paris. Lancaster leads an exceptional cast in this engrossing film, based on a true story. Michel Simon is especially memorable, as is the gritty, minimally-lit black and white photography of Jean Tournier.

A band of escaped prisoners have armed themselves and boarded a train, and it’s only a matter of time before they begin to execute the frightened passengers. Terror Train

Terror Train

$8.48

Riding the coattails of the resurgent boom in horror films after the success of Halloween, Terror Train features teeth-chattering direction by Roger Spottiswoode and pristine cinematography from John Alcott. The story is the basic slasher film premise, remounted on a moving train. A college fraternity decides to hold a New Year’s Eve party on a train. But an uninvited guest, a disturbed ex-fraternity member, decides to take revenge on the partying students by killing them off one by one in increasingly grisly fashion. On board the terror train is horror film perennial Jamie Lee Curtis, along with David Copperfield, and Ben Johnson as Carne the conductor, who tries to calm the women students by saying things like, Now you young ladies stay up here –it’s too dangerous down in that other car. ~ Paul Brenner, Rovi Guide

Train Master

Train Master

$12.74

An official selection of the 2008 Kids First Film Festival, Phil Branson’s gentle adventure Train Master follows a young group of children aboard a runaway train, and their parents’ efforts to stop the locomotive before it runs straight into a nuclear cooling tower implosion. Jeremiah was a railroad worker who lived his life on the tracks. When wealthy East Coast railroad heir Brett Banner purchased Western Railroad and fired Jeremiah without a second though, the former lineman quickly fell into despair. Later, Brett’s nine year old son Justin learns that Jeremiah’s grandson Thomas can drive a locomotive, and kidnaps the dinosaur enthusiast’s favorite prehistoric toy in order to lure him onto a train in need of repair. Brett’s plan goes awry, however, when he, Justin, and three other kids accidentally set the train into motion, forcing Brett and Jeremiah to put aside their differences for the sake of saving the kids. Now, with the train racing towards a nuclear cooling tower that’s about to be demolished, the two grown nemeses use their knowledge of the tracks in order to prevent the situation from spiraling into disaster. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

The Mystery Train

The Mystery Train

$5.93

Future gossip columnist Hedda Hopper enjoyed one of her few top-billed movie roles in the independently-produced thriller Mystery Train. After several reels of heavy plotting, a Pullman car is cut loose from its train and sent hurtling down a steep railway slope in the Rockies. Hero Ronald Stanhope (Jack Stuart) manages to catch up with villain William Mortimer (Bryant Washburn), and the two duke it out on the rear platform of the car. Will Ronald be able to rescue the other passengers before they’re plunged over a cliff. Cast as one Mrs. Radcliffe, Hedda Hopper doesn’t have much to do except alternately express terror and disdain. The special effects in Mystery Train are first-rate, which is more than can be said for the dialogue. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

The Ghost Train

The Ghost Train

$21.21

In this thriller, a group of stranded passengers are terrified by the weird tales of a stationmaster who tells them of the ghost train that rumbles down the darkened tracks. It turns out that the phantasmical locomotive is very real and is used by a gang of arms smugglers. ~ Sandra Brennan, Rovi

Amok Train

Amok Train

$8.47

This low-budget Italian exercise stars Bo Svenson (in a ridiculous-looking fake beard) as a college professor who takes a group of American students to a remote Serbian village to witness an ancient Balkan religious service. Unbeknownst to the kids, Svenson has an ulterior motive: he intends to recruit Beverly (Mary Kohnert), the sole virgin of the group, to participate in the ceremony — actually an occult ritual in which she is to become the Devil’s bride. The kids learn of this treachery and try to escape aboard a moving train, but soon find that the engineer is none other than Satan himself, who causes the train to jump its tracks and speed off through the wilderness toward the village again. Most of the kids are destroyed in their attempts to avert the train’s course — all but Beverly, who has foiled the Devil’s plan in her own way, thanks to an enigmatic flutist (Igor Pervic). Needless to say, the Evil One is not pleased. Released directly to video, this attractive-looking but rather hollow occult horror is related in name only to Mario Bava’s penultimate Beyond the Door 2, which in turn bears almost no connection to Exorcist rip-off Beyond the Door (aka Chi Sei?). ~ Cavett Binion, Rovi

Money Train

Money Train

$8.49

A pair of New York City cops collaborate on a plan to rob a cash-packed subway train in this action-comedy. Charlie (Woody Harrelson) and John (Wesley Snipes) are not just co-workers and close friends but also foster brothers. Because of this family connection, the reluctant John becomes involved in the more capricious Charlie’s far-fetched scheme to rob the money train that collects the subway’s daily grosses. Charlie needs the money for gambling debts, and robbing the train would have the added benefit of angering Charlie’s and John’s harsh, corrupt boss Captain Patterson (Robert Blake). Romantic interest is provided by a fellow police officer (Jennifer Lopez) who sparks rivalry between the brothers, but the film’s main interest is in the violent events that surround the attempted heist, which naturally proves more complicated than planned. The film attempts to capitalize on the chemistry between Snipes and Harrelson, who had previously had a hit comedy with White Men Can’t Jump (1992), but Joseph Ruben’s unexceptional direction and a bland screenplay by Doug Richardson and David Loughery make the film less distinctive than its predecessor. ~ Judd Blaise, All Movie Guide

Night Train

Night Train

$12.73

A train conductor (Danny Glover), a pre-med student (LeeleeSobieski), and a fast-talking salesman (Steve Zahn) find their greed clashing with their better judgment after stumbling into a fortune in diamonds aboard a speeding locomotive, and attempting to figure out a way to keep their discovery a secret. A nameless passenger has died en route to an unknown destination. His only possession: a mysterious box containing a valuable treasure. With that amount of money, the conductor, the student, and the salesman could all live comfortably for the rest of their days. But all three would rather have the fortune to themselves, and as the train races toward its destination, temptation, betrayal, deceit drives them each to irrational extremes in a paranoid bid to outsmart the others. Little do these three desperate souls realize that there’s something sinister to this innocent looking box, and they might not find out what it is until it’s already too late. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

Strangers on a Train

Strangers on a Train

In one of Alfred Hitchcock’s suspense classics, tennis pro Guy Haines (Farley Granger) chances to meet wealthy wastrel Bruno Anthony (Robert Walker) on a train. Having read all about Guy, Bruno is aware that the tennis player is trapped in an unhappy marriage to to wife Miriam (Laura Elliott) and has been seen in the company of senator’s daughter Ann Morton (Ruth Roman). Baiting Guy, Bruno reveals that he feels trapped by his hated father (Jonathan Hale). As Guy listens with detached amusement, Bruno discusses the theory of exchange murders. Suppose that Bruno were to murder Guy’s wife, and Guy in exchange were to kill Bruno’s father? With no known link between the two men, the police would be none the wiser, would they? When he reaches his destination, Guy bids goodbye to Bruno, thinking nothing more of the affable but rather curious young man’s homicidal theories. And then, Guy’s wife turns up strangled to death. Co-adapted by Raymond Chandler from a novel by Patricia Highsmith, Strangers on a Train perfectly exemplifies Hitchcock’s favorite theme of the evil that lurks just below the surface of everyday life and ordinary men. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

A socially-challenged otaku (Japanese slang for geek) saves an attractive female from the unwanted advances of a lecherous salaryman while commuting on the local train route, only to become infatuated with the kind and thankful woman in a romantic comedy that takes its cue from a real-life romantic encounter. Densha Otoko (Takayuki Yamada) may not have much experience with the ladies, but what he lacks in romantic know-how he more than makes up for in gentlemanly instinct. When Densha notices an unruly drunk making a female train passenger (Miki Nakatani) uncomfortable, his snap decision to come to her rescue finds the relieved woman requesting his address so that she may send him a gift for his thoughtful display of kindness. Densha isn’t the smoothest operator in town though, and in order to make a good impression he soon begins seeking out the romantic advice of his equally inexperienced internet friends. Now, as Densha strives to improve his social skills in order to win the heart of the woman he has grown to love, his romantic journey will find him realizing that there is much more to life than the heady philosophy behind the Matrix Trilogy. ~ Jason Buchanan, Rovi

A brainy teen whose impressive intellect sets her apart from the pack embarks on a desperate search for her missing sister in first-time director Takeshi Furusawa’s atmospheric frightener. Nana’s sister Noriko has gone missing after discovering what appeared to be a lost railway pass. When Nana discovers that another area teen had recently disappeared after making a similar discovery, the concerned girl recruits a classmate with a mysterious bracelet and a recently suspended train conductor to aid her investigation. The Man on the Train

The Man on the Train

$16.96

This quaint and amusing tale from director Patrice Leconte pairs Milan (Johnny Halliday), a nomadic criminal, with Manesquier (Jean Rochefort), a reserved and very settled former poetry teacher. The two men meet on the train in a French suburb, and before long the overly trusting Manesquier has invited Milan to be his house guest because the local hotels are closed for the night. The two men cautiously get to know each other, and they find that they have many things in common, even though they appear on the surface to be utter opposites. But deep down, they both desire to live life in the shoes of the other, even if just for a short period of time. And in a subtle, mutually understood way, they do just that.

Four college students are forced to pay for their actions after a startling act of violence in this urban drama. Katrina (MC Lyte) is a college freshman who, after attending a big party on campus, is invited to a smaller private get-together being thrown by Will (Wood Harris), a charismatic senior. After plenty of drinking, Will and his buddies slip a dose of a date rape drug into Katrina’s wine, and four men violate her after she’s passed out. Will and his cohorts think the whole sordid matter is over the next morning, but it quickly becomes evident that Katrina is not about to forgive or forget the incident. Train Ride also features appearances by Russell Hornsby, Joe Clair, rapper Guru, and Esther Rolle in her final screen appearance (the film was released well over a year after her death in November 1998). ~ Mark Deming, Rovi

Caught on a Train

Caught on a Train

$21.24

Over the course of one night and many miles, the lives of three passengers aboard a trans-European train are changed forever. English businessman Peter (Michael Kitchen) finds to his amazement that the friendship he’s struck up with a carefree American woman called Lorraine (Wendy Raebeck) is quickly turning into something far more involved. Meanwhile, an older and demanding Viennese woman named Frau Messner (Dame Peggy Ashcroft) seems to have every intention of trying Peter’s patience until they all witness its end. ~ Cammila Albertson, Rovi Guide Lorraine’s alarming xenophobia. As the trio’s differing worldviews comically collide, Poliakoff’s drama becomes a poignant contrast of Old World tradition and New World modernity.

The Girl on the Train

The Girl on the Train

$23.78

In 2004, a grotesque and unseemly incident took the European press by storm: a young French woman came forward and claimed to have been attacked by black and Arab thugs who mistook her for a Jew. But after her story broke, no witnesses came forward to support her, and security cameras at the train station revealed no such attack; the woman later admitted that she had ripped her own clothes, drawn swastikas on her own stomach, and fabricated the entire story. With the drama Fille du RER, acclaimed French writer-director André Téchiné presents a thinly veiled fictionalization of the same events. Ã milie Dequenne stars as Jeanne, an unemployed girl who lives with her mother (Catherine Deneuve) in a Parisian suburb and spends the majority of her free time rollerblading. She has little knowledge of — or interest in — history or politics, and remains withdrawn, insular, and sullen, keeping the majority of her thoughts and observations to herself. Circumstances change just a bit when Jeanne enters a live-in relationship with a beefy, thuggish wrestler boyfriend, Franck (Nicolas Duvauchelle), living in a dingy warehouse, but violence soon erupts between the two. Jeanne also becomes acquainted with an attorney-cum-ex-boyfriend of her mother’s (Michel Blanc), whose involvement in Judaic causes and his politically committed family prompt even greater feelings of alienation and isolation in Jeanne. When Franck’s involvement in criminal activities comes to light and the police intervene, Jeanne perversely reasons that she can only become tied to history by inventing a role for herself, and decides to fabricate said story about the train — little realizing the calamitous consequences that it will engender. ~ Nathan Southern, Rovi

Rex Harrison astonished his fans by donning a Nazi uniform in the British suspenser Night Train (originally titled Night Train to Munich). Actually he’s a British agent, working undercover to rescue a Czech inventor from the Gestapo. The inventor’s daughter (Margaret Lockwood) becomes the unwitting pawn of a genuine Nazi (Paul von Hernreid, just before he became Paul Henreid) during a long train ride from Germany to France and back again. Director Carol Reed never denied that his inspiration for Night Train was Hitchcock’s The Lady Vanishes (both films were written by Frank Launder and Sidney Gilliat). The homage was solidified by the presence in Night Train of two carryovers from the Hitchcock film: those ardent British cricket fans Charters and Caldicott (Basil Radford and Naunton Wayne). Night Train was liberally adapted from the Gordon Wellesley novel Report on a Fugitive. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Guide

Jim Jarmusch broadens his scope with this episodic tale of a night in the life of several Memphis, Tennessee, inhabitants who unknowingly find themselves lodging at the same hotel. The first episode, Far from Yokohama, is about two Japanese teenagers (Youki Kudoh and Masatoshe Nagase) on a pilgrimage to the birthplace of rock and roll, Sun Studios, where Elvis Presley and Carl Perkins got their start. In the second story, A Ghost, two strangers meet and become friends. One is an Italian tourist, Luisa (Nicoletta Braschi), who is on the way back to Rome in order to bury her husband; the other, Dee Dee (Elizabeth Bracco), has just dumped her British boyfriend, Johnny (Joe Strummer). During the middle of the night, Luisa is visited by the ghost of Elvis. Lost in Space, the final segment, brings all the characters together briefly, as Johnny goes on a violent drinking spree with Dee Dee’s brother (Steve Buscemi) and another friend (Rick Aviles). Throughout all of this, the hotel’s night clerk (Screamin’ Jay Hawkins) and bellboy (Cinque Lee) listen to the local radio and engage in aimless conversation. Jarmusch once again uses his distinct sense of humor to dispel cultural myths–this time it’s the legend of Memphis–by placing an eclectic group of tourists into an unquestionably American environment.

Great Train Robbery, The (1903)

$12.74

Director Edwin S. Porter made film history when he completed the 13 sequences for the 12-minute The Great Train Robbery, released in 1903 but based on an 1896 story by Scott Marble. Featuring the first parallel development of separate, simultaneous scenes, and the first close-up (of an outlaw firing off a shot right at the audience), The Great Train Robbery is among the earliest narrative films with a Western setting. The opening scenes show the outlaws holding up the passengers and robbing the mail car in the train, before escaping on horseback. After being knocked out by the bandits, the telegraph operator regains consciousness and heads to the dance hall to get a posse together. The posse takes off to hunt down the outlaws and the chase is on. ~ Matthew Tobey, Rovi

The finest way to travel from Siliguri to Darjeeling is by way of the Darjeeling Himalaya Toy Train. The surroundings of Siliguri are well worth a visit and just a few kilometres away is Kali Mandir, a Hindu temple dedicated to the goddess, Kali and also Coronation Bridge an old but impressive structure that was designed and built by the British in 1930.The small train begins to move away slowly and travels through Siliguri, the buildings of which were constructed after the railroad. There is little traffic as only one train travels into the mountains each morning with another returning in the evening.British engineering made this railroad possible, an 88 kilometre railroad connection to the mountain world of the Himalayas. The idea was to transport the world famous tea of the same name from Darjeeling, quickly, economically and safely to the coast from where it was shipped to the United Kingdom. The passage through Jore Bunglow is so narrow that the police must stop the road vehicles so that the train can travel through the village without danger.Several jeeps gather in the narrow street that is cloaked in a mysterious mist. Finally we arrive at Ghoom Station, at just below 8,000 feet the railroad’s highest point.Darjeeling short main street with its many shops and restaurants leads to Charastha Square in which noble buildings are reminiscent of glorious times gone by.Thank you the Darjeeling Himalayan Toy Train for a unique journey and one which will not easily be forgotten!

Throw Momma From the Train

Throw Momma From the Train

$12.73

The exchange murders plot gambit, played with utter solemnity in Hitchcock’s Strangers on a Train, is used as the launching pad for raucous laughter in Throw Momma From the Train. Director/star Danny DeVito plays Owen Lift, a middle-aged bachelor, totally dominated by his gorgon mother, played with hilarious ferocity by Anne Ramsey. Billy Crystal co-stars as Larry Donner, a creative-writing professor, saddled with a vituperative, thoroughly despicable ex-wife, Margaret (Kate Mulgrew). Signing up for Larry’s writing course, Owen has trouble at first with character development and construction in his stories. Larry recommends that Owen watch a screening of Strangers on a Train, which he considered a model of tight, concise storytelling. Owen is so entranced by the film that he decides to emulate Strangers star Robert Walker. That is, Owen wants Larry to bump off his mother, in exchange for Owen’s murder of Margaret. Without being asked, Owen does away with Margaret (or so it seems), then hounds Larry to the point of killing Momma. This being a comedy, the actual consequences of the swap-murder plot aren’t nearly as calamitous as in the Hitchcock film. Cinematographer Barry Sonnenfeld would apply the black humor lessons learned in Throw Momma From the Train for his own directorial debut, The Addams Family (1991). ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Movie Guide

Great Train Robbery, The (1979)

Great Train Robbery, The (1979)

$12.71

Michael Crichton’s most accomplished directorial effort, THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY is a stylish thriller based on his best-selling book about the first robbery to take place aboard a moving train. Set in 1855 England, Edward Pierce (Sean Connery) is a master thief with the ambitious goal of stealing a shipment of gold bars en route to the Crimea. Conspiring with his beautiful mistress, Miriam (Lesley-Anne Down), and England’s greatest locksmith, Agar (Donald Sutherland), Pierce sets out on a quest to copy each of four keys needed to open the train’s vault, keys that are kept and guarded by different parties. Giving a smooth performance reminiscent of his James Bond role, Connery infuses Pierce with a disarming confidence as he seduces his way through the upper-class environment of the key holders, who seem to have their own low-brow weaknesses. From the decadent parties and mansions of the wealthy to the brothels and dog fights of the underclass, THE GREAT TRAIN ROBBERY is a historical tour de force that culminates in the suspenseful, dangerous climax of this true story.

Money Train [P&S]

Money Train [P&S]

$8.48

~ Judd Blaise, Rovi

S1 Train Vietnam

S1 VIETNAM The famous train S1 leads through both Central and South Vietnam, one of the most fascinating countries in South East Asia. In the 19th century Da Nang quickly evolved to become the most important harbour and financial metropolis in Central Vietnam and thus replaced Hoi An as the country’s main city. The year 1858 marked the beginning of fast approaching colonisation when French warships attacked Da Nang’s bay and natural harbour. The Vietnam S1 train travels from the capital of Hanoi deep into the south of the country. Almost the entire section of the railway line between Da Nang and the southern city of Nha Trang is dominated by vast fields of rice and the scenery features several wonderful mountains and a landscape that is often so spectacular that it is quite overwhelming. Da Lat, the capital of the province of Lam Dong, is known as the City Of Eternal Spring and is a popular holiday resort. It also contains the summer residence of the last emperor of Vietnam. Surrounded by wonderful parks, the summer palace of Emperor Bao Dai is one of the city’s most beautiful attractions and was heavily influenced by the French. Now it is surely only a question of time before the VIETNAM S1 Train and this fascinating region of VIETNAM become an integral part of the mainstream tourist map of South East Asia.Source: Travel Video Store

The Last House on the Left was a morally bankrupt but highly profitable film about rape, murder, and revenge. The 1978 sequel, The New House on the Left, may even be more reprehensible than the original. Whereas the murder site of the first film was a remote house, the scene of the crime in the sequel is a train (thereby negating the title). This film includes more rapes, more murders, and more revenge than the original –and, undoubtedly, more cash lining the pockets of the producers. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi Meril-DEEP RED), who becomes, oddly, a puzzling accomplice to their crimes. The three villains set about humiliating and tormenting the two girls, which culminates in Lisa’s rape and subsequent murder; consequently, Margaret throws herself from the train as well. Zhou Yu’s Train

$25.46

Gong Li, star of such epics as RAISE THE RED LANTERN and JU DOU, is unforgettable as the title character in ZHOU YU’S TRAIN, the poignant story of an unusual love triangle set in the Chinese countryside. Zhou Yu is an impulsive woman who makes porcelain pottery for a living, painting each one exquisitely. After meeting shy poet Cheng Ching (Tony Leung Ka Fai), she starts visiting him, taking a two-hour train ride twice a week from Sanming to Chongyang. On that train she is pursued by Dr. Zhang (Honglei Sun), a country vet who is intrigued by both her and a porcelain vase she has made. While Cheng Ching remains tentative, unable to completely commit to her and his poetry, Zhou Yu’s burgeoning friendship with Zhang threatens to turn into something more.Cowriter/coproducer/directo r Sun Zhou has crafted a beautifully alluring film in ZHOU YU’S TRAIN, set among the lush green countryside of China. One particularly gorgeous scene involves Zhang and Zhou Yu searching for a lake that Cheng Ching has compared to his lover. The complex story is told in nonlinear fashion, with scenes from the past converging onto the present in repeated ways that shed new light on the characters and their relationships. Gong Li is outstanding in a dual role, her eyes dancing across every scene. In only his second film, Honglei Sun shows remarkable depth. Wang Yu’s stunning cinematography and Shigeru Umebayashi’s haunting score add yet more wonder to this softly bittersweet film.

However, Changhua and Suqin were not able to bring their two children with them, and since then the kids have been raised by their grandparents, with their mother and father staying in touch though occasional telephone calls. The only time they have a chance to see their now-teenage children is during China’s annual New Year’s celebration; they are among the 130 million Chinese whose work keeps them away from their families and make the trip home during the holiday, resulting in an overcrowded rail system as the trains struggle to keep up with the rush. Filmmaker Lixin Fan follows Changhua and Suqin over the course of several years in the documentary Last Train Home, as the couple makes the long journey home (over a thousand miles) only to find that their family is slowly falling apart — 16-year-old Qin and her younger brother, Yang, are all but strangers now to their parents, and the youngsters have come to resent their parents, while Qin considers leaving school to move to the city on her own and get a job. The Great St. Trinian's Train Robbery

The Great St. Trinian’s Train Robbery

$21.21

Cartoonist Ronald Searle’s delightfully diabolical private-school girls are back in action in The Great St. Trinian’s Bank Robbery. Comedian Frankie Howerd plays the head of a train-robbery gang who cleverly hides the loot from their biggest haul (presumably the infamous Great Train Robbery of 1963) in a deserted old mansion. The gang waits the traditional seven years for the statute of limitations to run out then returns to the mansion to dig up their $7 million booty. Unfortunately, the joint has been converted into the new site for St. Trinian’s School for Girls. Even more unfortunately (for the crooks, but not the audience) those girls are all holy terrors. The film’s climax occurs during a riotous Parents’ Day ceremony, which predictably segues into a wild train chase. Great St. Trinian’s Train Robbery might have been funnier had Alastair Sim, the star of the first three St. Trinian’s entries, made a return appearance. ~ Hal Erickson, Rovi

Big Train - Season One and Two

Big Train – Season One and Two

$29.71

Sketch-comedy show BIG TRAIN lasted for two seasons and first aired on British television towards the end of 1998. The show is heavily indebted to the quick-fire wit of MONTY PYTHON’S FLYING CIRCUS, and also borrows some surrealist ideas from John Cleese and co. Writers Graham Linehan and Arthur Matthews, who worked on popular shows such as FATHER TED and BLACK BOOKS, contributed ideas to the first season, while comedy luminaries such as Simon Pegg (SHAUN OF THE DEAD), Julia Davis (NIGHTY NIGHT) and Peter Baynham (BORAT) also add some magic.

The Sin of Nora Moran & Prison Train

The Sin of Nora Moran & Prison Train

$21.23

Doubled up for DVD release with The Sin of Nora Moran, Prison Train is a short, effective suspense piece that uses lack of budget as inspiration for a somewhat surreal turn in art design and photography. Image Entertainment has provided a transfer from a very clean print — there are some speckles, blemishes, and tiny scratches, as well as the odd awkward splice and sudden softness, but the look as a whole is very good indeed. The transfer has an aspect ratio of 1.33:1, which is close to the original 1.37:1. The overall monochrome balance is excellent, with very good contrast and deep, detailed blacks that show up particularly well in the last third of the film. The image is sharp for the most part, without signs of edge enhancement, and is relatively free of grain. As the movie is on its own layer, the bit budget is fairly generous, and compression artifacts have been avoided. The sound is in slightly worse shape, with some crackling and a little bit of hum remaining. Enough work has been done, however, to make dialogue intelligible and the mono sound effective overall — the locomotive and train sound effects are very distinct — though sound has a slightly muffled quality throughout. Sound levels are very good and stay shy of clipping. There are 12 chapter stops. No extras are provided. Prison Train is a fairly minor thriller from the Gower Gulch end of Hollywood, but this release treats it nicely and is painless to watch. ~ Steven E. McDonald, Rovi

Last Train From Gun Hill

Last Train From Gun Hill

$8.49

Just outside the small town of Pauley, a Native American woman is attacked by two riders on horseback, raped, and killed. Her husband, Matt Morgan (Kirk Douglas), the town marshal, has only two clues to their identity, a fancy saddle with the initials C.B. that one of the men left behind, and the fact that his wife cut one of the two men deep across the cheek with a buggy whip. Morgan traces the saddle to Craig Belden (Anthony Quinn), an old friend and now a wealthy rancher in the town of Gun Hill, but he knows Belden well enough to know that he couldn’t have had anything to do with attacking his wife. Morgan’s arrival with Belden’s saddle sets off ugly rumblings in Gun Hill, and when he confronts the rancher, he discovers that it was his son Rick (Earl Holliman) who had his horse and the saddle, and rode out with a cowhand friend of his, Lee (Brian G. Hutton) — but they claim their horses were stolen. Belden tries to convince Morgan, and wants to believe himself that whoever stole the horses must have killed his wife, but when Morgan mentions the cut that one of the killers will have on his face, they both know the truth. He vows to take Rick and Lee back to Pauley to stand trial, while Belden swears he’ll do anything it takes to protect his son. Belden is virtually all the law there is in Gun Hill — the sheriff (Walter Sande) won’t help Morgan serve his arrest warrants on the two men, or even let him use the jail to hold them until the last train that night; there’s not a working man, a shopkeeper, or even a prostitute in the whole town that will go against the rancher, and Belden’s foreman Beero (Brad Dexter) and his men will strongarm anyone who might start feeling brave. Only Linda (Carolyn Jones), a woman who has been both romanced and abused by Belden, will lift a finger on Morgan’s behalf. The marshal is nothing if not resourceful, however, and Rick Belden is also too stupid for his own good, and manages to fall into Morgan’s hands in short order. Very quickly, a standoff ensues, with Morgan holding Rick in one of Belden’s buildings against virtually the entire town, while the deadline — the last train out of Gun Hill that night — approaches. People die and a chunk of Belden’s holdings are destroyed, but Morgan is about to get Rick onto the train and off to trial when suddenly, one sudden act of violence destroys father and son in a matter of seconds. ~ Bruce Eder, All Movie Guide

Last Train from Gun Hill

$8.49

Kirk Douglas stars as U.S. Marshal Matt Morgan. When Morgan’s wife is raped and murdered because she’s a half-breed, the killers leave behind a saddle that he recognizes as the property of his friend Craig Belden (Anthony Quinn), a wealthy cattle rancher in the nearby town of Gun Hill. Realizing that Belden’s son Rick (Earl Holliman) is one of the killers, Morgan travels to Gun Hill to arrest him. Although sympathetic about the death of Morgan’s wife, Belden predictably refuses to turn over his son when the marshal makes known the purpose of his visit, claiming that Morgan owes him for having once saved his life. Not only must Morgan locate and arrest Rick, but he has to do so before the last train leaves Gun Hill at 9 p.m. Although the whole town, which is virtually owned by Belden, seems to be against him, the marshal receives some much-needed help from Linda (Carolyn Jones), the sharp local madam. The entire cast is excellent and John Sturges’s direction is exemplary in this solid if unsurprising genre exercise.

Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train

Those Who Love Me Can Take the Train

$25.46

Patrice Chereau (Queen Margot) directed this French drama about a train trip to an artist’s funeral. Friends of painter Jean-Baptiste Emmerich (Jean-Louis Trintignant, seen in flashbacks) gather at a Paris railroad station for a four-hour journey to Limoges, where Emmerich wanted to be buried. The dozen travelers include art historian Francois (Pascal Greggory) and his lover Louis (Bruno Todeschini), who develops an interest in teenage Bruno (Sylvain Jacques). Traveling parallel with the train is a station wagon with Jean-Baptiste’s body, and this vehicle is driven by Thierry (Roschdy Zem), husband of Catherine (Dominique Blanc), who’s on the train with their daughter. Francois plays a taped interview with Jean-Baptiste, revealing his sexual appeal to both men and women. Lucie (Marie Daems) is convinced that she was his main love. Also on board is his nephew, Jean-Marie (Charles Berling) and Jean-Marie’s estranged wife, Claire (Valeria Bruni-Tedeschi), After the funeral in Europe’s largest cemetery, the storyline continues in the mansion of Jean-Baptiste’s brother, Lucien (also played by Trintignant). With hand-held camerawork for almost two-thirds of the film, the production involved two extra cars connected to a real scheduled train, headed one way in the morning and returning in the afternoon, with cast and crew logging some 12,000 kilometers over two weeks. Source music runs the gamut from James Brown to Jim Morrison. The title refers to the dying words uttered by the painter — which actually are the last words spoken by filmmaker Francois Reichenbach who died in 1993 (and appropriated here by his friend, co-scripter Daniele Thompson). One of Francois Reichenbach’s best-known films (and subject of an entire book) is the documentary Medicine Ball Caravan (aka We Have Come for Your Daughters,1971), a curious effort to duplicate the success of Woodstock (1970) by simply inviting a large number of musicians, hippies, and counterculture types aboard a cross-country train and filming the result. Shown in competition at the 1998 Cannes Film Festival. ~ Bhob Stewart, All Movie Guide
