Issues $6.77 Released in the fall of 1999, when Korn were in danger of being overshadowed by such protégés as Limp Bizkit, Issues reaffirms the group’s status as alt-metal leaders, illustrating that the true difference between Korn and their imitators is their mastery of sound. Korn are about nothing if not sound. Sure, Jonathan Davis doesn’t merely toss off lyrics, but in the end, it doesn’t matter since his voice and the various words that float to the surface simply enhance the mood. Similarly, the band doesn’t really have any distinguished riffs or hooks — everything each member contributes adds to the overall sound — so, casual listeners can be forgiven if they think the songs sound the same, since not only do the tracks bleed into one other, the individual songs have no discernible high points. Each cut rises from the same dark sonic murk, occasionally surging forward with volume, power, and aggression. It’s mood music — songs don’t matter, but the foreboding feeling and gloomy sounds do. To a certain extent, this has always been true of Korn albums, but it’s particularly striking on Issues because they pull off a nifty trick of stripping their sound back to its bare essentials and expanding and rebuilding from that. They’ve decided to leave rap-metal to the likes of Limp Bizkit, since there is very little rapping or appropriation of hip-hop culture anywhere on Issues. By doing this, they have re-emphasized their skill as a band, and how they can find endless, often intriguing, variations on their core sound. Issues may not be the cathartic blast of anger their debut was, nor is it as adventurous as Follow the Leader, but it better showcases the sheer raw power of the band than either. ~ Stephen Thomas Erlewine, Rovi |

Back in Town $7.18 George Carlin fluctuates between two polar extremes of intellect on Back in Town. The album is mostly plagued by this single problem, which prevents it from reaching the heights it might have otherwise. Carlin’s material is consistent, in that it all takes the form of societal criticism, but whereas his caustic gaze can sometimes intelligently deconstruct an issue as complicated as abortion, elsewhere his routine devolves into mere profane insults and gross-out humor. The aforementioned abortion bit joins a discussion of familiar expressions as the disc’s highlights, and most of the parodies of modern phenomena in “Free-Floating Hostility” are on the mark. This meditation on capital punishment and state-prison farms drags on with jokes taken so far that it’s difficult to remember Carlin is actually parodying these issues. Also, skip over “Farting in Public” — the title speaks for itself. ~ Brian Egan, Rovi Performers: Klem Klimeck – Saxophone |

Givin’ It Back $30.39 Givin’ It Back is as much a time capsule as an album. Not that it can’t be enjoyed on its own absolute musical terms by someone just off a boat who wasn’t even around in 1971, but to really appreciate how daring it was and how delightful it is, that side of its history should be known. Those who are old enough should recall the time whence it came, an era in which hatred and disunity over the Vietnam War, civil rights, school desegregation, the environment, and a multitude of other issues were threatening what seemed, potentially, like the beginning of a new civil war, this one not between states but between factions and ethnic and racial groups in 1,000 individual neighborhoods. The opening cut of Givin’ It Back, “Ohio/Machine Gun,” is a slap-in-your-face reminder of just how angry the times and the people were. The track evokes instant memories of the campus bloodshed of 1970, not just at Kent State but also the often-forgotten killings a few days later at Jackson State University in Mississippi, where the victims of a fusillade of sheriff’s deputies’ bullets were black students. More than that, the track itself is also a reminder of the divisions that existed on the left; to listen to pundits on the right, the anti-war and civil rights movements, along with the counterculture, were all part of one vast, organized, calculated left-wing conspiracy. The truth is that there was nearly as big a split, culturally and politically, between young blacks and young whites on the left and on college campuses as there was anywhere else in the population. Blacks reacting to years of oppression had little use for mostly middle-class white college students, however sympathetic many of them purported to be to their situation, while well-meaning white students and activists couldn’t begin to know what privation of the kind experienced by blacks and Hispanics in most American towns and cities was. In music, too, there was a lot of division; blacks usually didn’t resonate to the top artists in the white world and, in particular, were oblivious to (and even resentful of) the adoration accorded Jimi Hendrix by the white community. So, when the Isley Brothers — whose appeal among black audiences was unimpeachable — opened Givin’ It Back with a conflation of Neil Young’s “Ohio” and Jimi Hendrix’s “Machine Gun,” they were speaking to anger and bloodshed in the streets, but they were also performing an act of outreach that was about as radical as any they could have committed on record in 1971. That they incorporated a prayer into their reformulation of the two songs, amid Ernie Isley’s and Chester Woodard’s guitar pyrotechnics, turned it into one of the most powerful and personal musical statements of its era, and it’s worth the price of the album just for the one cut. Givin’ It Back is filled with virtues of that kind, however; it was the first Isley Brothers album to rely entirely on outside material, but the group’s reworkings of songs by James Taylor (“Fire and |

Back Home $31.98 Eric Clapton claimed in the press release for Back Home, his 14th album of original material, that “One of the earliest statements I made about myself was back in the late ’80s, with Journeyman. This album completes that cycle in terms of talking about my whole journey as an itinerant musician and where I find myself now, starting a new family. That’s why I chose the title. It’s about coming home and staying home.” With that in mind, it becomes clearer that the studio albums Clapton released during the ’90s did indeed follow some sort of thematic logic. 1989′s Journeyman did find Clapton regrouping after a muddled ’80s, returning to the bluesy arena rock and smooth pop that had been his signature sound as a solo artist. He followed that with 1994′s From the Cradle, where he explicitly returned to the roots of his music by recording an album of blues standards. Four years later, he released Pilgrim, a slick album that had Clapton strengthening his collaboration with producer/co-writer Simon Climie (who first worked with EC on his electronica side project T.D.F.). If Pilgrim touched on father issues, 2001′s Reptile loosely returned Clapton to his childhood (complete with a smiling boyhood shot of him on the cover) and found the guitarist struggling with a seemingly diverse selection of material, ranking from ’50s R&B to James Taylor. After a brief blues detour on 2004′s Me and Mr. Johnson, Clapton returns to the sound and feel of Reptile for Back Home, but he doesn’t seem to be as tentative or forced as he did there. Instead, he eases comfortably into the domesticity that isn’t just the concept for the album, it’s reason for being. In fact, the album doesn’t need “back” in its title — ultimately, the album is just about being home (which, if the center photo of Clapton at home with his three young daughters and wife is to be believed, looks alarmingly similar to the set of Thomas the Tank Engine, complete with a painted rainbow shining through the window). While it’s hard to begrudge the 60-year-old guitarist for finding a happy home after all these years, what is puzzling about this calm, comfortable album is that Clapton is equating domestic bliss with a glossy, consciously classy sound that’s swept clean of dirt and grit, or even the blues. Consequently, Back Home is pitched halfway between the lite contemporary soul of Pilgrim and Clapton’s time as a Michelob spokesman in the late ’80s. Each track rides a tight, professional groove — sometimes a bluesy vamp, sometimes a reggae jam, usually something soulful but relaxed — and while instruments sometimes bubble up from the mix (sometimes it’s Clapton’s guitar, but just as often it’s Billy Preston’s organ, or occasionally a synth straight out of 1987), the emphasis is always on the smooth, shiny surface. Unlike such peers as Bob Dylan, Elton John, and the Rolling Stones who revitalized their recording careers with back-to-basics moves that stripped their music down to its essence, Clapton seems |

Bringing Buildings Back (Paperback) $26.73 Written by a distinguished urban planner and practitioner with three decades of experience, the original volume of Bringing Buildings Back provided both a detailed toolkit and a call to rethink the way America carries out urban redevelopment. This second edition of Alan Mallach`s now classic work contains new material that directly addresses the issues that have arisen as communities across the country try to stabilize their neighborhoods in the wake of the foreclosure crisis. It discusses both the fundamental "big picture" issues and the technical and practical questions that have emerged. Mallach explores the concept of neighborhood stability and explains how it relates to the economic forces affecting a community, city, or region. As in the prior volume, this updated edition of Bringing Buildings Back does not seek simply to provide technical guidance to practitioners; it also suggests creative ways of thinking about local policies, strategies, and actions. Ultimately, no plan for dealing with problem real estate is about just the properties themselves; it is about how to build stronger, healthier neighborhoods, towns, and cities. |
