Injured Vehicle

County Councils of Devon and Cornwall, are taking part in a new campaign launched by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) to reduce the number of people killed or injured by vehicles delivery in the two counties. Three people died in 2007-08 and 219 people were seriously injured by moving vehicles in their jobs between 2004 and 2008 in the region. To highlight hazards, the HSE and local authorities are conducting security awareness event for local businesses and are pushing truckers to fit reversing aid to these vehicles, such as CCTV cameras.

A key aspect of transport safety and legal requirements employers' is to ensure that sites are sure to keep vehicles and people over and segregated so that both can move safely. The HSE are encouraging companies to look at the security measures, as they clearly marked traffic routes, barriers, adequate crossing points and the speed bumps to control traffic flow in confined yards.

The HSE also wants companies to think very carefully the points of loading and unloading. Not only do workers have to dodge the dangers of delivery vehicles in these areas, but they also consider the risks posed by forklifts and other problems such as unstable loads in transit. It is here that most of these types of incidents occur, often because workers operating machinery such as forklifts have a safety training are inadequate or poorly trained in the operation of these vehicles. All these situations present the possibility of preventable accidents to happen, and the subsequent compensation claims arising from such injuries.

HSE is trying to drive home the point that places of work must clearly and easily understood (as executive), rules and procedures so that all those working in the area knows exactly what is expected of them. These rules on how vehicles and people moving on a limited movement space to support the safety precautions put in place physical. HSE believes that rules clear to be put in place by those who are just able to operate machinery such as forklifts.

Not only the unloading of delivery vehicles that the HSE is targeted in this campaign. Also highlighting the dangers to drivers of delivery itself, which, due to the terrain of the region, often find themselves having to maneuver vehicles large in very narrow streets and having to attempt difficult procedures reverse. The larger the vehicle, the greater the 'Blindspots' in the mirror of the driver, and the HSE is trying to highlight the risk of crushing injury to pedestrians who move around a great vehicle reversing.

And the campaign seems to work. A haulage wide in the southwest has reported that since you were reversing cameras fitted to their vehicles, the number of road accidents that vehicles of the fleet was been involved in had been cut in half. Not only had the potential to save lives and reduce injuries, but the decision to equip the cameras had also saved the company considerable amount of money by reducing insurance premiums, cutting down on applications for compensation and reducing damage to its fleet vehicles.

Highlighting risks, the HSE and local authorities have done business in the region more aware of the potential risks faced every day by drivers and delivery personnel. Protect their safety in what can be a very dangerous environment, where time, non-profit and a quick turn 'around' are of the utmost importance, means that companies can still operate for maximum efficiency, without putting the lives of their workers at risk. For this, the HSE is to be applauded and it is hoped that this campaign will achieve national recognition over the next few months.
