General American

What is the difference between American-style capitalism and capitalism in general?
I heard a lot of "american-capitalism" style, but how is that any different from capitalism in general? I thought American-style capitalism was the royal capital. What is the difference?
This means the government usually leave the road and let me do something !!!!!! MONEY

An American General $3.94 Stanley had a remarkable American military career. He started in 1853 by surveying a railroad route along the 35th parallel, and fighting the Cheyenne on Solomon’s Fork and the Comanche near Fort Arbuckle. At the start of the Civil War he turned down a Confederate commission and led Federal troops in dozens of battles, including most of the battles in the Atlanta Campaign and the defense of Nashville. After the war he led the Yellowstone expedition of 1873, then served in Texas and New Mexico, covering almost the entire Indian frontier. A remarkable and truly American life. |

American Notes for General Circulation $23.93 Charles Dickens entered the world of travel writing with his 1850 work, American Notes for General Circulation. Dickens’ travels were part of the trend of European writers, such as Alexis de Tocqueville and Harriet Martineau, who came to America to comment on her successes and failures in the experiment of democracy. His work, reflecting his 5-month trip to America in 1842, proves to be a testing ground for his own democratic and radical ideals. Traveling mainly along the East Coast and Great Lakes regions, his writing style was that of critical observer or reporter, rather than that of a tourist. Dickens visited prisons and mental asylums and parodied local manners, including tobacco spitting and rural dialects. Slavery proved to be abhorrent to Dickens, and the continuation of the institution in America, as well as the free availability of bootlegged copies of his work, colored his more positive observations of American society. His commentary about Wall Street, the press, and the prison system, while often satiric and funny, have a thoroughly modern appeal. While originally revered and given a hero’s welcome, Dickens’ interactions with the American press, especially in relation to his views on America’s lack of copyright law, tarnished his impressions of America and America’s impressions of him. Though his travels, Dickens became sensitized to the differences between the ideals of democracy and equality and the application of those ideals in American society. It is these differences that came to be elucidated in the development of the darker, more cynical world-view of his later novels. |

Greely 182 General Greely and General Brainard, on Greelys gist Birthday 238 IX Introduction IN April, 1898, while a student at college, I sat in the gallery of the United States Senate, of which my father was a member, and heard that august body declare war against Spain. That declaration meant only one thing for me and that was to go home and enlist under the flag of our country. A few days after this I became a full-fledged private in the First Wisconsin Infantry, the successor of the organization with which my father had marched to the Civil War. After serving for a short time as a private, I was discharged to accept a commission in the Signal Corps of the United States Army, which was just then being organized. Like many boys of eighteen, I knew little about what this meant and did not relish leaving my organization, as we expected to be fighting the Spaniards in Cuba in a short time. However, orders were orders and I was assigned as a second lieutenant to the 2nd Volunteer Signal Company then being organized at Washington Barracks, D. C. As there was practically no Signal Corps when the war began, one had to be improvised at once. This important work was under the direction of General A. W. Greely, on whose recommendation I had been commissioned in the Signal xi |

The Emperor’s General $3.95 Captain Jay Marsh had never questioned where his ultimate loyalty lay. He had witnessed the bloody horror left behind by the retreating Japanese army during World War II’s final days. And he had abandoned his beautiful Filipina fiance e to see his duty through. But not even Marsh could guess the terrible personal price he would have to pay for his loyalty. He would follow General Douglas MacArthur to Tokyo itself. There he would become the brilliant, egocentric general’s confidant, translator, surrogate son–and spy. Marsh would play a dangerous game of deliberate deceit and brutal injustice in the shadow world of postwar Japan’s royal palaces and geisha houses, and recognize that the defeated emperor and his wily aides were exploiting MacArthur’s ruthless ambition to become the American Caesar. The Emperor’s General is a dramatic human story of the loss of innocence and the seduction of power, about the conflict between honor, duty, and love, all set against an extraordinary historical backdrop. |

Finally they can share their passion in the ruins of a great estate on the storm-tossed Cornish coastone last time before being torn apart, never to embrace again. |

Henry Knox: Visionary General of the American Revolution $16.23 Mark Puls delivers a compelling portrait of the Revolutionary War general who played a key role in all of George Washington’s battles. During the Siege of Boston, Henry Knox’s amazing 300 mile transport of forty nine cannons from Ticonderoga saved the city. Building upon his talent for logistics, Knox engineered Washington’s famous Christmas night passage to safety across the Delaware River. And it was the general’s tactical successes that made the final victory at Yorktown possible. With riveting battle scenes, inspiring patriotism, and vivid prose, Puls breathes new life into the American Revolution and firmly re-establishes Knox in his deserved place in history. |

General Thomas Posey: Son of the American Revolution $15.25 Revolutionary War general Thomas Posey (1750-1818) lived his life against the backdrop of one of the most dramatic periods in American history. Posey, who played a minor role in the actual War for Independence, went on to participate in the development and foundation of several states in the transappalachian West. His experiences on the late 18th- and early 19th-century American frontier were varied and in a certain sense extraordinary; he served as Indian agent in Illinois Territory; as Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky, as U.S. Senator from Louisiana, and as Governor of Indiana during its transition from territorial status to statehood. His biographer speculates on the contrasting influences of Thomas’s ne’er-do-well father, Captain John Posey, and the family’s close friend, General George Washington. Posey’s progress is then followed as he raises his own family in the newly formed nation. Of particular interest is an appendix containing a detailed analysis of evidence available to support popular 29th-century speculation that Thomas Posey was, in fact, George Washington’s illicit son. |

American Deserter. General Eisenhower and the Execution of Eddie Slovik $35.31 Eddie Slovik was the most famous American soldier to come out of World War Two. Or was infamous a better description? For 24 year old Slovik, Polish-American, petty thief and ex-con, was the only Allied soldier to be shot for desertion in the course of that long conflict. For nearly ten years the US Dept. of Defence tried to keep the Slovik case secret and even when it was revealed the American military hid the place of the condemned man’s burial for a further thirty years. Thus when the details of the Slovik case were finally brought out into the open, there was much talk of an official cover-up. Now veteran military historian, Charles Whiting has attempted to dig up the final truth. He reveals in this fast paced intriguing book that Slovik was not the innocent victim that his advocate had maintained he was. In that year in which he was sentenced to death for desertion in the ‘face of the enemy’, he played a calculating game with the US Army -and lost. Whiting also reveals another secret: the man who would approve Slovik’s death sentence and have him shot in a remote French mountain village, General (and future President) Dwight D. Eisenhower was also under a sentence of death that winter himself. |

General Theory of Law & State $48.19 General Theory of Law and State is divided into two parts: the first devoted to law, the second to the state. Together these topics constitute the most systematic and comprehensive exposition of Kelsenas jurisprudence. The volume is not only a compendium of Kelsenas lifework; it is also an extension of his theories to embrace the problems and institutions of English and American law as well as those of the Civil Law countries. Indeed, references to Continental European law are minimal compared with examples, scattered throughout the text, taken from the U.S. Constitution and several American court cases. This is more than a concession to American readers; it signifies that Kelsenas legal theory is truly general in that it accounts for the Common Law as well as the Civil Law. |

American Blacklist: The Attorney General’s List of Subversive Organizations $33.19 Resonating with disturbing implications for the present, American Blacklist is the only full-length study of the so-called Attorney General’s List of Subversive Organizations (AGLOSO) and its critical role in the post–World War II Red Scare. Although earlier versions of AGLOSO date back as far as 1903 and were wielded by the federal government during both the post–World War I Red Scare and World War II, they were not widely publicized. But beginning in December 1947, as part of the Truman administration’s loyalty program, the federal government engaged in a massive effort to publicize the AGLOSO lists. In the process, it threatened, damaged, or destroyed nearly 300 organizations, all of which were listed without any notice, evidence, or hearings. Drawing heavily on previously classified FBI, Justice Department, and other documents, Robert Goldstein demonstrates how the listed organizations and their members (including a large number of federal employees) came under suspicion, were investigated, and suffered numerous public and private penalties. These included the loss of federal tax-exempt status, the denial of passports, deportations and immigration exclusions, ejection from federally subsidized housing, and private employment bans. AGLOSO, which was dominated by J. Edgar Hoover’s FBI, also placed a huge damper on political dissent throughout the nation. After 1954, AGLOSO and the Red Scare both came under increasing attack as serious violations of American civil liberties. Indeed, AGLOSO’s declining significance after 1954 reflected a more general decline in the postwar Red Scare campaign itself. Both gradually diminished in impact and importance, but they left a long-lastinglegacy. As Goldstein reveals, AGLOSO’s final demise in 1974 resulted from congressional opposition to President Richard Nixon’s attempt to revive it via a 1971 executive order, which was severely attacked as an abuse of executive authority and an attack on civil liberties. The subsequent controversy preceded by only three months the Watergate investigation and the collapse of the Nixon presidency, events that continue to leave their unsettling mark on an equally troubled present. |

General MacArthur and President Truman $43.82 Large Print Edition This book was first published in 1951 as The General and the President after President Harry S. Truman relieved General Douglas MacArthur in the midst of the Korean Wara -a memorably explosive incident in American political history. But its significance extends far beyond a dramatic episode in the nation’s past. This literate and ironic work continues to be an invaluable guide to the conflict between civilian and military authority, and it illuminates latera -and currenta -controversies over the role the United States should play in Asian affairs. This new edition is graced by a remarkable introductory essay by Arthur Schlesinger, Jr. The text is reprinted from the 1965 republication under the title The MacArthur Controversy, that is, the book as originally written with a few tenses altered and a few topical allusions deleted. General MacArthur and President Truman will be of special interest to students of American diplomacy, politics, and culture and to all concerned with the relationship between the armed forces and larger society. |
