Gas prices have been spiraling out of control for months, and no end in sight. Rising gas prices do not just strike when you fill the tank if. Just think about it for a minute and you realize how many ways the rise in prices of oil and gas will cost you. The price of travel services and shipping cost airlines are likely to increase, as the cost of many other goods retailers are forced to pay more for delivery.

You can also see your property taxes increase as towns have to pay more to keep their police cars, fire and garbage trucks on the road.

During times like these, it is important to get as much bang for you buck at the gas pump as possible.

As you can save on gas?

While there is little to do about the market price of a barrel of oil, there are ways to keep your own personal expenses, the gas pump. Here are some suggestions: Do not pay extra for premium gas if you do not need. Consult your owners manual and adhere to the octane recommended. Most cars run fine on regular unleaded fuel and will not receive performance using premium gas.

Look around. Keep a watchful eye and you'll be surprised how prices can vary from one gas station to the next. I've seen differences of eight to ten cents per gallon between gas stations directly across across the street from each other. It seems a small difference, but you add in time.

Planning your commissions to minimize the time for unity, or, if possible, on foot.

Travel light. Keep your car in the back seat and loads of combustible waste as it requires more energy to move a heavy car. Take only the essentials (a spare tire, first aid kit, jumper cables, etc.) with you.

Slow. The faster you drive the fewer you get the miles per gallon. Drive constant. Avoid sudden stops and accelerations that waste fuel. Anticipate braking ahead of time and ease on the pedal gas, rather than flooring it.

Maintenance is the key. Keep the engine tuned and tires inflated can make a difference in fuel consumption. Under-inflated tires create drag, which causes the engine to use more energy to push the car. Moreover, it is not safe to drive on tires that have air too little or too much in them.

If you're in the market for a new car, consider models that are more fuel efficient. Using the air conditioner judiciously. There are two schools of thought on this. The first says that burn less fuel, with the windows down and AC off. The second says that driving with the windows open creates drag, that waste more fuel that could be used if the AC was on and the windows up.

So that one is true? Well … Both really. The car will consume more fuel with the air conditioning and the windows down to about 45-50 mph. As you drive faster, the resistance caused my the open windows actually cause high fuel consumption.

So the rule is this: keep the AC off and windows down when you cruise around town and on the streets of the city. Once you reach the highway or about 50 km / h, roll the windows and turn on the AC.

Using these tips will help you save money on gas. While you can not notice a huge difference with each fill, the savings will compound with each fresh tank
