The transport of container ships began in 1951 between Alaska and Seattle. The first purpose built container ship the Clifford J. Past
The effort to ship cargo in a container launched in early 19 Century. These containers can be moved from railways to ships or trucks. Containers used at that time were much smaller than what we see today.

In 1920 half Railway Milwaukee and Chicago North Shore began to use vehicles loaded 'and motor carrier vehicles on flatcars between Milwaukee and Chicago route. Later, Seatrain Lines carried railroad cars on ships to move goods between Cuba and New York. Addition, the Chicago Great Western Railway and the New Haven railroad began transporting trailers haulage road countertops. In the early 1950s, these platforms gained more equipped with new decks.
