What exactly is fiber-optic communications capable of?
I did a lot to look at fiber optics and Fiber to the Home. throughout all my research have yet to land on a page to tell me the capacity for it. Anyone know what this stuff is capable of? I mean, when you reach the point of fiber for the taken with the construction of new house we are removing telephone and cable? How many simultaneous forms of media can be transmitted over a single fiber optic feed? Phone, Internet, and "cable" television? Any help would be appreciated, this stuff is fascinating!
The physical limits of what can be pushed through fiber optic cable has not yet been reached. New techniques are still being developed to tighten and compress and run different wavelengths of light through cable fiber optics, in order to increase the speed and amount of data that can be pushed through the wires. Here in Japan, fiber to the house has already been offered for cable and Internet services. With IP Phone offereings already out there (Skype, Vonage, etc), you can eventually eliminate the copper wires that come into the house for the services provided you have a provider that supports you. Inside the house is another problem. Copper Wire is still the cheapest and most sensible thing to put inside of a house in the wireless technology. Fiber optic equipment is very expensive – too expensive for home now. Give it a few years (maybe 50) and perhaps everything will be guided light – at least until they find something else to use!
