Ukrainians of the Delaware Valley $18.58 At the dawn of the 20th century, the industrializing world provided Ukrainians an opportunity to immigrate to America to lead free and honorable lives. Ukrainians of the Delaware Valley illustrates the Ukrainiansa ongoing saga, commencing with the late 19th century when they disembarked in the Delaware Valley and continuing to the present, as they gradually integrated into their American communities. The Ukrainiansa common purpose was to preserve their unique eastern culture, cherished daily customs, and elaborate traditions embalmed in the mysteries of their eastern religion in new surroundings. Ukrainians of the Delaware Valley documents how each new generation of immigrants added to the kaleidoscope of Ukrainian communities in 17 of the boroughs of the Delaware Valley. |

Historic Synagogues of Philadelphia & the Delaware Valley $19.84 In 1740, Nathan Levy- one of the first Jewish residents of Philadelphia- requested a plot of land to give his child a Jewish burial. This plot on Spruce Street became the first Jewish communal cemetery and marked the beginning of organized Jewish life in the colonial city. Throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, floods of Jewish immigrants came to the United States from Europe and settled in Philadelphia and throughout the Delaware Valley. As a result, hundreds of synagogues were organized and flourished. Today, Philadelphia’s myriad synagogues are like living museums of architectural history. From small wooden structures that evoke Eastern Europe to the sharp angles, modern lines and soaring sanctuary space envisioned by Frank Lloyd Wright, these synagogues reflect changing trends in style, design and function. With this comprehensive collection of images, Preisler helps record the region’s unique religious and cultural history and captures in time its architectural treasures. |

Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area $19.78 Europeans first settled in what was to become the Delaware Water Gap National Recreation Area (DWGNRA) in the 17th century. By the late 1800s, the Delaware Water Gap had become a popular vacation spot, attracting thousands to the palatial resorts in the mountains. Rural communities thrived in the valley until the 1960s. The DWGNRA was created in 1965 to oversee activities centered around a reservoir that was to be the result of a dam to be built on the Delaware River at Tocks Island. In anticipation of the dam, the government removed residents by purchasing or condemning property. An environmental and political war raged, and the dam was ultimately defeated. Although several historical sites were lost, many survived and a few have been restored. Today the DWGNRA is one of the country’s most popular parks. Within its boundaries are rugged and beautiful wilderness, historic landmarks, and the wild and scenic Delaware River. |

Hopewell Valley $18.73 The picturesque Hopewell Valley is one of New Jersey’s finest treasures. Sprawled over more than sixty square miles, the valley encompasses the boroughs of Hopewell and Pennington, the village of Titusville, and the township of Hopewell. From Christmas night of 1776, when George Washington and his troops crossed the Delaware River, to the twentieth century and the saga of Charles Lindbergh’s missing infant son, Hopewell Valley has been steeped in history and drama. Rare images gathered from the Hopewell Valley Historical Society and local residents make up this monumental pictorial journey. Hopewell Valley combines the famous and not-so-famous elements of these communities nestled between the Delaware River and the Sourland Mountains. Home to key figures in American history, the Hopewell Valley has also seen important developments in architecture and industry. Although modernization has taken hold, the rural character of the area remains intact. And although the area has been home to well-known faces and events, Hopewell Valley is peppered with the lesser-known faces and places that bring out the full flavor. |

Delaware’s Forgotten Folk: The Story of the Moors & Nanticokes $25.94 "It is offered not as a textbook nor as a scientific discussion, but merely as reading entertainment founded on the life history, social struggle, and customs of a little-known people."–From the PrefaceC. A. Weslager’s "Delaware’s Forgotten Folk" chronicles the history of the Nanticoke Indians and the Cheswold Moors, from John Smith’s first encounter with the Nanticokes along the Kuskakarawaok River in 1608, to the struggles faced by these uniquely multiracial communities amid the racial and social tensions of mid-twentieth-century America. It explores the legend surrounding the origin of the two distinct but intricately intertwined groups, focusing on how their uncommon racial heritage–white, black, and Native American–shaped their identity within society and how their traditional culture retained its significance into their present.Weslager’s demonstrated command of available information and his familiarity with the people themselves bespeak his deep respect for the Moor and Nanticoke communities. What began as a curious inquiry into the overlooked peoples of the Delaware River Valley developed into an attentive and thoughtful study of a distinct group of people struggling to remain a cultural community in the face of modern opposition. Originally published in 1943, "Delaware’s Forgotten Folk" endures as one of the fundamental volumes on understanding the life and history of the Nanticoke and Moor peoples. |

Delaware and Delaware County (Paperback) $35.3 From its early founding to becoming a university town, from the interurban railroad era to the famous Little Brown Jug harness race, Delaware and Delaware County, Ohio, have many stories to tell. Pres. Rutherford B. Hayes was born here. Vincente Minnelli, set designer, director, and father of actress Liza Minnelli, spent his youth in Delaware. Delaware and Delaware County were both established in 1808. Ohio Wesleyan University opened in the heart of Delaware in 1842 and is still a major presence in the community. Starting in the 1850s, railroads made Delaware an important regional center of commerce and industry, with products ranging from grapes to chairs to city transit buses. Today, Delaware County is one of the fastest growing counties in the nation. Even so, it has retained much of its rural landscape. The city of Delaware is home to some 34,000 residents but still has the character of a classic Midwestern courthouse town. In these pages, the reader will discover the story of Delaware and of Delaware County communities such as Ashley, Galena, Ostrander, Powell, Radnor, Shawnee Hills, and Sunbury. |

Germantown and the Roads to Valley Forge $32.15 This second in a monumental two-volume set on the 1777 campaign of the American Revolution follows the saga from Cornwallis’s triumphal march of his British and Hessian troops into Philadelphia in late September to Washington’s movement of the weary Continental forces to camp at Valley Forge in December. Based on soldiers’ and civilians’ vivid accounts–many uncovered for the first time from private collections–the story of the compelling fight for independence reaches its most desperate moments. Defeated at Brandywine and outmaneuvered near Valley Forge, the Continental forces were worn out and ill equipped. Yet on October 4, Washington would embark on his first major offensive of the war–a surprise attack at dawn on Howe’s main camp at Germantown. Again defeated, though narrowly this time, the Continentals gained valuable experience and new confidence in the possibility of victory. The seige of the Delaware River forts–one of the bloodiest and prolonged battles of the war–ended with British success in mid-November, but still Howe failed to end the war. In his last American offensive before his resignation took effect, Howe tried unsuccessfully to draw Washington from the fortified hills of Whitemarsh. Now, as the Continental forces moved to Valley Forge for the winter, they would have to face their greatest challenge — survival. |

Delaware 1638-1776 $3.95 Although geographically small, Delaware has a big history. The state has been claimed at different times by more foreign countries than any of the other 13 British colonies. Aided by historical maps, archival illustrations, and first-person accounts, readers experience the chilling Indian massacre of the first European settlers and follow the events that helped the region develop into a thriving colony, as it changed from Swedish to Dutch to British control. They learn how Delaware provided Pennsylvania with vital access to the sea and became the subject of a dispute between William Penn and Maryland’s Lord Baltimore. Readers also learn how Delaware’s early support of independence helped it build a militia of nearly 4,000 men and how Delaware was first in line to ratify the Constitution for the newly created United States. |

Remembering Delaware $15.48 Dela-where? is a joke that all too often hits a nerve with residents of the second smallest state, but Dela-here is a great place to be–amid all the big cities of the Eastern Seaboard but just far enough from the beaten path to have its own unique identity. With a selection of fine historic images from her best-selling book, Historic Photos of Delaware, Ellen Rendle provides a valuable and revealing historical retrospective on the growth and development of Delaware in Remembering Delaware. This collection of photographs celebrates the First State’s history with an eclectic mix of rural and urban, from the rolling hills and swift streams of New Castle County to the flat and rich agricultural lands of Kent and Sussex counties to the enduring beauty of the beach communities of the Atlantic Coast. Subjects range from horse-drawn farm machinery and black powder wagons to the celebratory openings of the Delaware Memorial and the Chesapeake Bay bridges. Years of growth and growing pains are buoyed with proud and happy moments at ship christenings, the Delmarva Chicken Festival, and cultural achievements. A tour of Remembering Delaware is sure to provide an illuminating and fond journey back into the state’s rich history. |
