Trying to find 1st gear in the older 8000 Ford Cargo Truck?

It's a big Ford Cargo 8000 Tilt Cab with 5-speed, has a range selector, but not working.Anyways, I have trouble finding the gear without using the clutch .. my problem is shifting into 1st gear from a stop.I have nearly crashed into 1 of Jamming with force, the noise is horrible! I tried to rev the engine and if they are coasting to a stop in I easily gear.But then I have to keep the clutch through light.Is a red is a better way?

On some of those old unsynchroed Ford with a 1st gear is useful if you pass in second or third and then go to 1 with a po 'double clutching on the road. Can be a bear.
