Suggestions / feedback on which job to take, Federal Aviation Administration vs. Burlington Northern Railway?
I have two job offers, one from FAA and one from BNSF and do not know what to take. The pay is comparable for both, and the performances seem to be comparable for both. If anyone has any insight on what you think is better to work for the government or train?
Depends on your situation and risk tolerance. FAA is a government job in the United States. It's going to be quite safe, and the pension is probably a good, if you stay so long. BNSF is one of the few railways making a profit, why do a lot of goods. That improving in the coming years but will always be at risk if the economy tanks again. If you are just out of school, without dependents, BNSF will give you valuable experience in and if you save on a safety net, the economic risk is modest. But if you have any load, FAA has a stable income, you will still get some good experience. Congrats on two offers!

Burlington $21.38 Few communities in the United States can boast of a history as long and as rich as Burlington. Situated on the Delaware River between Camden and Trenton, Burlington was settled in 1677 by English Quakers and named for Burlington, England. The city was incorporated in 1784 and soon became a center for the manufacture of cast-iron products, clothing, and footwear. Burlington was the capital of the province of West Jersey from 1681 to 1702, and one of the capitals of the United East and West Jersey from 1702 to 1790. The Great Northern Railway: A History $24.23 In the sprawling Northwest, from the upper Mississippi River valley to Puget Sound, no railroad shaped the landscape and society like the Great Northern Railway Company. This is the complete history of that enterprise, from 1856, when the first charter was granted, through the era of James J. Hill-known as the Empire Builder-to its maturation and eventual merger in 1970, when the eight-thousand-mile Great Northern was incorporated into the massive Burlington Northern. The Great Northern Railway highlights the changes brought on by economic, political, social, and technological advances, including world wars, increased competition from other modes of transportation, and tighter government restrictions. The first part of the book (1856-1916) examines the railway’s early strategies and philosophy, relations with employees, and vigorous campaigns to develop the service area. The second part of the history (1916-1970) offers an assessment of a dramatic period of transition for the railroad-international conflicts, the Great Depression, the rise of motor vehicles, increasing labor costs, and stronger unions. Illustrated with more than two hundred maps, period photographs, and drawings, the volume also includes appendixes listing the original track-laying history, track removals, ruling grades on main freight routes, and main line ruling grades from Minneapolis to Seattle.
