Model Selection and Model Averaging

Model Selection and Model Averaging

$65.16

Choosing a model is central to all statistical work with data. We have seen rapid advances in model fitting and in the theoretical understanding of model selection, yet this book is the first to synthesize research and practice from this active field. Model choice criteria are explained, discussed and compared, including the AIC, BIC, DIC and FIC. The uncertainties involved with model selection are tackled with discussions of frequent and Bayesian methods; model averaging schemes are presented. Real-data examples are complemented by derivations providing deeper insight into the methodology, and instructive exercises build familiarity with the methods. The companion website features Data sets and R-code.

The transtheoretical model is also known by the acronym "TTM" and by the term "stages of change model." A popular book and articles in the newsmedia have discussed the model. It is "arguably the dominant model of health behaviour change, having received unprecedented research attention, yet it has simultaneously attracted exceptional criticism"

Model Checking

Model Checking

$60.33

Model checking is a technique for verifying finite state concurrent systems such as sequential circuit designs and communication protocols. It has a number of advantages over traditional approaches that are based on simulation, testing, and deductive reasoning. In particular, model checking is automatic and usually quite fast. Also, if the design contains an error, model checking will produce a counterexample that can be used to pinpoint the source of the error. The method, which was awarded the 1998 ACM Paris Kanellakis Award for Theory and Practice, has been used successfully in practice to verify real industrial designs, and companies are beginning to market commercial model checkers. The main challenge in model checking is dealing with the state space explosion problem. This problem occurs in systems with many components that can interact with each other or systems with data structures that can assume many different values. In such cases the number of global states can be enormous. Researchers have made considerable progress on this problem over the last ten years. This is the first comprehensive presentation of the theory and practice of model checking. The book, which includes basic as well as state-of-the-art techniques, algorithms, and tools, can be used both as an introduction to the subject and as a reference for researchers.

Lisette Model

$37.98

Lisette Model is an unsurpassed introduction to one of the twentieth century’s most significant photographers–a woman whose searing images and eloquent teachings deeply influenced her students Diane Arbus, Larry Fink and many others. To mark the twenty-fifth anniversary of Model’s death in 1983, Aperture is reissuing this classic, highly collectible 1979 monograph–the first book ever published on Model–in the original oversized trim and with the original distinctive design by Marvin Israel, along with an updated chronology and bibliography. This timeless volume contains more than 50 of Model’s greatest images, from the rich idlers on the Promenade des Anglais in the South of France to the sad, funny and often eccentric inhabitants of New York’s most subterranean haunts. As Berenice Abbott said in her preface, "One of the first reactions when looking at Model’s pictures is that they make you feel good. You recognize them as real because real people express a bit of the universal humanity in all of us."

Model Theory, Algebra, and Geometry

Model Theory, Algebra, and Geometry

$32.23

Model theory is a branch of mathematical logic that has found applications in several areas of algebra and geometry. It provides a unifying framework for the understanding of old results and more recently has led to significant new results, such as a proof of the Mordell-Lang conjecture for function fields in positive characteristic. Perhaps surprisingly, it is sometimes the most abstract aspects of model theory that are relevant to those applications. This book gives the necessary background for understanding both the model theory and the mathematics behind the applications. Aimed at graduate students and researchers, it contains introductory surveys by leading experts covering the whole spectrum of contemporary model theory (stability, simplicity, o-minimality and variations), and introducing and discussing the diverse areas of geometry (algebraic, diophantine, real analytic, p-adic, and rigid) to which the model theory is applied. The book begins with an introduction to model theory by David Marker. It then broadens into three components: pure model theory (Bradd Hart, Dugald Macpherson), geometry(Barry Mazur, Ed Bierstone and Pierre Milman, Jan Denef), and the model theory of fields (Marker, Lou van den Dries, Zoe Chatzidakis).

Besides standard results such as the compactness and omitting types theorems, it also describes various links with algebra, including the Skolem-Tarski method of quantifier elimination, model completeness, automorphism groups and omega-categoricity, ultraproducts, O-minimality and structures of finite Morley rank. The material on back-and-forth equivalences, interpretations and zero-one laws can serve as an introduction to applications of model theory in computer science. Each chapter finishes with a brief commentary on the literature and suggestions for further reading. This book will benefit graduate students with an interest in model theory.

The Data Model Resource Book: Universal Patterns for Data Modeling

The Data Model Resource Book: Universal Patterns for Data Modeling

$49.87

This third volume of the best-selling "Data Model Resource Book" series revolutionizes the data modeling discipline by answering the question "How can you save significant time while improving the quality of any type of data modeling effort?" In contrast to the first two volumes, this new volume focuses on the fundamental, underlying patterns that affect over 50 percent of most data modeling efforts. These patterns can be used to considerably reduce modeling time and cost, to jump-start data modeling efforts, as standards and guidelines to increase data model consistency and quality, and as an objective source against which an enterprise can evaluate data models. Praise for "The Data Model Resource Book, Volume 3" "Len and Paul look beneath the superficial issues of data modeling and have produced a work that is a must for every serious designer and manager of an IT project." –Bill Inmon, World-renowned expert, speaker, and author on data warehousing and widely recognized as the "father of data warehousing" ""The Data Model Resource Book, Volume 3: Universal Patterns for Data Modeling" is a great source for reusable patterns you can use to save a tremendous amount of time, effort, and cost on any data modeling effort. Len Silverston and Paul Agnewhave provided an indispensable reference of very high-quality patterns for the most foundational types of datamodel structures. This book represents a revolutionary leap in moving the data modeling profession forward." –Ron Powell, Cofounder and Editorial Director of the Business Intelligence Network "After we model a Customer, Product, or Order, there is still more about each of these that remains to be captured, such as roles they play, classifications in which they belong, or states in which they change. "The Data Model Resource Book, Volume 3: Universal Patterns for Data Modeling" clearly illustrates these common structures. Len Silverston and Paul Agnew have created a valuable addition to our field, allowing us to improve the consistency and quality of our models by leveraging the many common structures within this text." –Steve Hoberman, Best-Selling Author of "Data Modeling Made Simple" "The large national health insurance company I work at has actively used these data patterns and the (Universal Data Models) UDM, ahead of this book, through Len Silverston’s UDM Jump Start engagement. The patterns have found their way into the core of our Enterprise Information Model, our data warehouse designs, and progressively into key business function databases. We are getting to reuse the patterns across projects and are reaping benefits in understanding, flexibility, and time-to-market. Thanks so much." –David Chasteen, Enterprise Information Architect "Reusing proven data modeling design patterns means exactly that. Data models become stable, but remain

Model Theory: An Introduction

Model Theory: An Introduction

$68.94

This book is a modern introduction to model theory which stresses applications to algebra throughout the text. The first half of the book includes classical material on model construction techniques, type spaces, prime models, saturated models, countable models, and indiscernibles and their applications. The author also includes an introduction to stability theory beginning with Morley’s Categoricity Theorem and concentrating on omega-stable theories. One significant aspect of this text is the inclusion of chapters on important topics not covered in other introductory texts, such as omega-stable groups and the geometry of strongly minimal sets. The author then goes on to illustrate how these ingredients are used in Hrushovski’s applications to diophantine geometry. David Marker is Professor of Mathematics at the University of Illinois at Chicago. His main area of research involves mathematical logic and model theory, and their applications to algebra and geometry. This book was developed from a series of lectures given by the author at the Mathematical Sciences Research Institute in 1998.

Exporting the Alaska Model (Hardcover)

$160.53

Contributors discuss the Alaska Permanent Fund (APF) and Permanent Fund Dividend (PFD) as a model both for resource policy and for social policy. This book explores whether other states, nations, or regions would benefit from an Alaskan-style dividend. Many other jurisdictions could create similar funds and dividends, but most of them under-tax resources, giving resources away to corporations who sell them back to the people at higher prices. The book also looks at possible ways that the model might be altered and improved. The contributors look back at the success of the APF and forward (using theory and empirical investigation) to see how the Alaska model can be of use in other places.

Principles of Model Checking

Principles of Model Checking

$52.38

Our growing dependence on increasingly complex computer and software systems necessitates the development of formalisms, techniques, and tools for assessing functional properties of these systems. One such technique that has emerged in the last twenty years is model checking, which systematically (and automatically) checks whether a model of a given system satisfies a desired property such as deadlock freedom, invariants, or request-response properties. This automated technique for verification and debugging has developed into a mature and widely used approach with many applications. "Principles of Model Checking" offers a comprehensive introduction to model checking that is not only a text suitable for classroom use but also a valuable reference for researchers and practitioners in the field. The book begins with the basic principles for modeling concurrent and communicating systems, introduces different classes of properties (including safety and liveness), presents the notion of fairness, and provides automata-based algorithms for these properties. It introduces the temporal logics LTL and CTL, compares them, and covers algorithms for verifying these logics, discussing real-time systems as well as systems subject to random phenomena. Separate chapters treat such efficiency-improving techniques as abstraction and symbolic manipulation. The book includes an extensive set of examples (most of which run through several chapters) and a complete set of basic results accompanied by detailed proofs. Each chapter concludes with a summary, bibliographic notes, and an extensive list of exercises of both practical and theoretical nature.

The Mammary Gland as an Experimental Model

$138.99

Studies of mammary gland biology are critically important given the prevalence of breast cancer in the population. There are many other reasons to study this organ, however. It represents an excellent model system for research into developmental mechanisms, gene regulation, tissue organization, hormonal action, secretion, and stem cell biology, revealing general principles that can be extended to other organs and tissues. Moreover, many in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo techniques have been developed using the mammary gland model and may be applied to other systems. This book therefore provides valuable lessons for all cell, developmental, and cancer biologists.

The Architectural Model (Hardcover)

The Architectural Model (Hardcover)

$160.95

The architectural scale model has long had an essential role in the design process, creating a tangible, three-dimensional representation of the finished building, but it has not been explored as an artistic medium in its own right. The Deutsches Architekturmuseum (DAM) began to fill in this gap in architectural scholarship in 2009, focusing on the history of the model with particular attention paid to the twentieth and twenty-first centuries. Drawing on the museum`s vast collection of models, comprised of more than 1,200 objects created by over four hundred architects from around the world, researchers created both this book and a corresponding exhibit set to open in May 2012. The Architectural Model covers a variety of topics, from the rise of specialized workshops after 1945 to the way in which more sophisticated machinery led to a ?Miniature Boom? in the 1950s and `60s. Of special interest is the discussion of the how working models are used by professionals to develop and change their ideas.

A Model for Communication about Biotechnology

A Model for Communication about Biotechnology

$28.49

This book incorporates two major themes into a model for communication about biotechnology. The first is that of a communicating community, defined as a relatively coherent social group engaging in communication within itself. As biotechnologists do not constitute a unitary group, this book refers to biotechnology communities. Similarly, the broad notion of ‘the public’ is considered to be inadequate, and the notion of distinct public communities is used. The members of each community are considered to have a view of biotechnology made up of their understandings of the nature of science of biotechnology, understandings of the key concepts and models used in biotechnology, perceptions of the nature of risk, and beliefs and attitudes about biotechnology. The second major theme is that of search space. This is the intersection, in a virtual arena, of the components of the ‘views’ of two communities. Where there are elements that are in common to the two, communication in terms of them is possible. Where there is no commonality, the degrees of understanding reached must be used to construct a mutual understanding that may evolve into an agreement.

The Boy Joiner and Model Maker

$16.02

All hail the industrious woodworking youngsters of the 19th century This enchanting and practical guide, originally published in 1874, offers these adept lads what its author calls, in the book’s subtitle, "Practical Directions for Making Numerous Articles for Use and Ornament, Mechanical Toys, Models, &c; With Descriptions of Various Tools, and the Method of Using Them."Learn how to build a small summer-house; model bridges, tables, bookshelves, gates, desks, dog kennels, and chests, along with specific woodworking skills like veneering and lengthening timber. The book aims to enlighten and entertain even as it strives to instill virtue and industry in its young readers. It’s a very handsome volume, with nearly 200 illustrations, a pleasing typeface and a charming authorial tone. The projects are a pretty varied lot, ranging from the simple to the very ambitious. While there is some basic instruction on how to do things, the author expects some familiarity with tools. It is however a great font of ideas and a starting point for lots of projects that you might not ordinarily attempt. We found the book a lot of fun. Incidentally the cover, which is a faithful restoration of the original is one of the cooler woodworking book covers ever. As a bonus, the detailed booklist from Cassell, Petter & Galpin, the original publishers, provides a fascinating window into the era’s recommended books for wholesome and hardworking families. Softcover, 227 pages.

The Model City: Blast to Present

The Model City: Blast to Present

$36.67

Henry Grady, who turned the Atlanta Constitution into a nationally prominent publication in a few short years, is credited with giving Anniston’s newspaper its maiden name, The Hot Blast. The inspiration, we’re told, came when Grady, in Anniston for a visit to this model city, noted the sparks shooting out from the company town’s foundry. "Hot Blast" seemed like a nifty handle for a paper covering northeast Alabama. On Aug. 18, 2008, The Anniston Star, the descendant of The Hot Blast, celebrated its 125th birthday. The paper was not alone in hitting the big 1-2-5. In early July, the city of Anniston marked 125 years of existence. The Star has created something we believe worthy of the anniversary. The book is a compilation of five special newspaper sections examining The Model City’s history and its future. It looks backwards, to Samuel Noble and Daniel Tyler’s grand experiment at creating a different sort of company town, one that treated workers fairly, established a foundation for a high-functioning community and aspired to lift the South from its post-war doldrums. This book aims to extract lessons from our past that can be applied to our future. The authors do this because we believes a community can’t know where it’s going until it’s sure of where it’s been. We hope you will find The Model City informative and challenging, as bracing as the whoosh of warm air blowing out of an iron furnace.

Portrait and Model of a School Counselor

Portrait and Model of a School Counselor

$52.31

This text profiles elementary school counselor Claudia Vangstad–her vision, identity, beliefs, capabilities, and behaviors–within the context of her school and community. The authors used Vangstad’s experience to construct a model of a school counselor in action and provide a broad framework for thinking and working like one. Through the study of this example, students are encouraged to evaluate their own beliefs, values, vision, and identity. Individual chapters include additional research to reinforce techniques and help students develop and use effective strategies. Each author provides a different theoretical perspective at the end of the chapter, focusing on either a counseling framework or a systems and developmental framework. A section entitled "New Horizons" provides suggestions for application of the ideas presented. Designed to supplement any school counseling course, this book: *is the first comprehensive portrait of the multi-faceted responsibilities of a real school counselor and an inspiring model for positive change in schools; *presents a special focus on the role that group work plays in changing a culture; *provides a mosaic of field-tested ideas, options, and concepts from an experienced counselor; *places emphasis on the importance of school culture and the community context, as well as the socialization function of a comprehensive counseling program; and *offers assistance to students in developing and using effective strategies, techniques, frameworks, and change-enhancing language.

Humanizing Psychiatry: The Biocognitive Model

Humanizing Psychiatry: The Biocognitive Model

$23.87

Does psychiatry have a future? Assailed from many directions, under constant attack for its reliance on "a drug for all problems" and increasingly unable to attract bright new trainees, the specialty is showing every sign of terminal decline. The reason is simple: modern psychiatry has no formal model of mental disorder to guide its daily practice, teaching and research. Unfortunately, the orthodox psychiatrists who control this most conservative profession are utterly antagonistic to criticism. Despite the evidence, they maintain a blind faith that "science will deliver the goods" by a biological examination of the brain. This book argues that their faith is entirely misplaced and is contributing to the destruction of an essential part of civilized life, the fair and equitable treatment of people with mental disorders. The author offers a rational model of mental disorder within the framework of a molecular resolution of the mind-body problem. Fully developed, this model will have revolutionary consequences for psychiatry–and the mentally-afflicted. Acclaim for the writing of Niall Mclaren, M.D. "This book is a tour de force. It demonstrates a tremendous amount of erudition, intelligence and application in the writer. It advances an interesting and plausible mechanism for many forms of human distress. It is an important work that deserves to take its place among the classics in books about psychiatry." –Robert Rich, PhD, AnxietyAndDepression-Help.com "Dr. McLaren brilliantly wields the sword of philosophy to refute the modern theories of psychiatry with an analysis that is sharp and deadly. His own proposed novel theory could be the dawn of a new revolution in the medicine of mental illness." –Andrew R. Kaufman, MD, Chief Resident of Emergency Psychiatry, Duke University Medical Center "I found Niall McLaren’s book to be an incredibly well-written and thoughtprovoking. It is not, by any means, easy reading. It is also not for someone who doesn’t have some form of background in understanding the various psychological theories and mental health conditions. I think that this would make an excellent textbook for a graduate class that allows students to question the theories that we already have." –Paige Lovitt for "Reader Views" About the Author The author is a psychiatrist of some 35 years standing. He writes philosophy in the bush outside Darwin, northern Australia, with his family as critics. For six years, while working in Western Australia, he was the world’s most isolated psychiatrist. The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion

The Model as Muse: Embodying Fashion

$50.66

"Model as Muse" explores fashion’s reciprocal relationship to iconic beauties that represent the evolution and changing face of the feminine ideal. Featuring a brief historical overview of the phenomenon of the supermodel, the book begins in the early 20th century and continues to the present day. Dorian Leigh and Lisa Fonssagrives in the 1940s are joined in the 1950s by Dovima, Sunny Harnett, and Suzy Parker. They are followed by Jean "The Shrimp" Shrimpton and Twiggy in the 1960s and Lauren Hutton in the 1970s. The 1980s witnessed such enduring personalities as Cindy Crawford, Christy Turlington, Naomi Campbell, and Linda Evangelista, while the 1990s brought on Kate Moss, whose edgy, street-inflected style has inspired not only fashion designers, editors, stylists, and photographers, but artists such as Chuck Close and Lucien Freud. With an emphasis on styles from the 1950s onward, the book features designs from the great ready-to-wear and couture houses–Madame Gres, Christian Dior, and Balenciaga in the 1950s; Rudi Gernreich, Yves Saint Laurent, and Cardin in the 1960s; Giorgio di Sant’Angelo and Halston in the 1970s; Christian Lacroix, Versace, Comme des Garcons, and Calvin Klein in the 1980s; and Marc Jacobs, John Galliano, and Alexander McQueen in the 1990s.

Model Assisted Survey Sampling

Model Assisted Survey Sampling

$76.26

Now available in paperback. This book provides a comprehensive account of survey sampling theory and methodology which will be suitable for students and researchers across a variety of disciplines. A central theme is to show how statistical modeling is a vital component of the sampling process and in the choice of estimation technique. Statistical modeling has strongly influenced sampling theory in recent years and has clarified many issues related to the uses of auxiliary information in surveys. This is the first textbook that systematically extends traditional sampling theory with the aid of a modern model assisted outlook. The central ideas of sampling theory are developed from the unifying perspective of unequal probability sampling. The book covers classical topics as well as areas where significant new developments have taken place notably domain estimation, variance estimation, methods for handling nonresponse, models for measurement error, and the analysis of survey data. The authors have taken care to presuppose nothing more on the part of the reader than a first course in statistical inference and regression analysis. Throughout, the emphasis is on statistical ideas rather than advanced mathematics. Each chapter concludes with a range of exercises incorporating the analysis of data from actual finite populations. As a result, all those concerned with survey methodology or engaged in survey sampling will find this an invaluable and up-to-date coverage of the subject.

Model Selection and Multi-Model Inference: A Practical Information-Theoretic Approach

Model Selection and Multi-Model Inference: A Practical Information-Theoretic Approach

$118.4

The second edition of this book is unique in that it focuses on methods for making formal statistical inference from all the models in an a priori set (Multi-Model Inference). A philosophy is presented for model-based data analysis and a general strategy outlined for the analysis of empirical data. The book invites increased attention on a priori science hypotheses and modeling. Kullback-Leibler Information represents a fundamental quantity in science and is Hirotugu Akaike’s basis for model selection. The maximized log-likelihood function can be bias-corrected as an estimator of expected, relative Kullback-Leibler information. This leads to Akaike’s Information Criterion (AIe and various extensions. These methods are relatively simple and easy to use in practice, but based on deep statistical theory. The information theoretic approaches provide a unified and rigorous theory, an extension of likelihood theory, an important application of information theory, and are objective and practical to employ across a very wide class of empirical problems. The book presents several new ways to incorporate model selection uncertainty into parameter estimates and estimates of precision. An array of challenging examples is given to illustrate various technical issues. This is an applied book written primarily for biologists and statisticians wanting to make inferences from multiple models and is suitable as a graduate text or as a reference for professional analysts.

Stability in Model Populations (Mpb-31)

Stability in Model Populations (Mpb-31)

$3.95

Throughout the twentieth century, biologists investigated the mechanisms that stabilize biological populations, populations which–if unchecked by such agencies as competition and predation–should grow geometrically. How is order in nature maintained in the face of the seemingly disorderly struggle for existence? In this book, Laurence Mueller and Amitabh Joshi examine current theories of population stability and show how recent laboratory research on model populations–particularly blowflies, "Tribolium, " and "Drosophila"–contributes to our understanding of population dynamics and the evolution of stability. The authors review the general theory of population stability and critically analyze techniques for inferring whether a given population is in balance or not. They then show how rigorous empirical research can reveal both the proximal causes of stability (how populations are regulated and maintained at an equilibrium, including the relative roles of biotic and abiotic factors) and its ultimate, mostly evolutionary causes. In the process, they describe experimental studies on model systems that address the effects of age-structure, inbreeding, resource levels, and population structure on the stability and persistence of populations. The discussion incorporates the authors’ own findings on the evolution of population stability in "Drosophila." They go on to relate laboratory work to studies of animals in the wild and to develop a general framework for relating the life history and ecology of a species to its population dynamics. This accessible, finely written illustration of how carefully designed experiments can improve theory will have tremendous value for all ecologists and evolutionary biologists.

I.T. in Crisis: A New Business Model

I.T. in Crisis: A New Business Model

$35.82

For half a century at least, I.T. teams have focused on solving business problems through computer technology – and largely ignoring the human element in their interactions with end users. In his new book I.T. IN CRISIS: A NEW BUSINESS MODEL, consultant L. Paul Ouellette shows how to bring the I.T. team into the twenty-first century. Organizations that employ I.T. professionals are facing a new economic landscape – one where closer, more engaged relationships with internal and external customers are not merely nice if you can get it, but essential for organizational survival. I.T.’s old business as usual approach – and let the relationship thing take care of itself – is, Ouellette warns, now a recipe for disaster. I.T.’s challenge is to adapt to the customer-focused operational realities of the twenty-first century. Teams that meet this challenge will thrive, and will create extraordinary opportunities for themselves and their organizations. Teams that don’t, Ouellette believes, will be marginalized or phased out. How do we make this (long-overdue) transition? By upgrading the I.T. Professional’s skill sets – and moving from the back room to the forefront of the business, the place where person-to-person connections with customers as human beings take place. In I.T. IN CRISIS: A NEW BUSINESS MODEL, Ouellette offers proven, real-world strategies for I.T. teams to forge closer bonds with their end users. He shows I.T. professionals how to change the way their customers think about I.T., how to improve I.T.’s standing within their own organizations, and how to enhance their own careers -Paul offers the 1 tool to turn negative relations into a positive one. Methods for successfully conducting the 3 main points of your clients’ interactions, learn what clients really want from I.T. and the 5 steps to building your sustainable service strategy. Building very specific empathy, listening skills, rapport-building, and overall relationship management capacities. Ouellette also includes the case studies and action forms that will help I.T. teams to execute on the book’s core concept. Today’s business environment is highly competitive. In order to survive, organizations must create new business models that focus "like a laser beam:" on the customer. For those who work in Information Technology (I.T.) customer relations is no longer a "nice to have skill, but rather a "must have:" skill. The average professional Information Technologist is lacking skills in this area – and thus I.T. faces a crisis. For the first time since the introduction of computer technology to the world of business, I.T. funding has been reduced, and investments going into computer business technology are declining. I.T. is no longer seen as the savior of a company’s bottom line. This state of affairs actually represents a new opportunity for I.T. If we make a conscious decision to conduct business differently, upgrade our skills, and focus on the customer – we c

Understanding and Managing Model Risk (Hardcover)

$178.82

A guide to the validation and risk management of quantitative models used for pricing and hedgingWhereas the majority of quantitative finance books focus on mathematics and risk management books focus on regulatory aspects, this book addresses the elements missed by this literature–the risks of the models themselves. This book starts from regulatory issues, but translates them into practical suggestions to reduce the likelihood of model losses, basing model risk and validation on market experience and on a wide range of real-world examples, with a high level of detail and precise operative indications.
