Union Pacific Country $50.36 "No one has done before what Athearn has done in this volume. He has utilized company records and a variety of other sources to write a very attractive and readable, but scholarly account of the impact of the Union Pacific and its branch line son the country it served from the 1860s to the 1890s. . . . Everyone from railroad buffs to Western history scholars will like the book."–Choice. "This highly readable book is an excellent history of the heart-breaking efforts to build the Union Pacific into a viable enterprise before the end of the nineteenth century. . . . Throughout this attractive reprint edition, Athearn provides insights and fresh perspectives not only on the Union Pacific but on other railroads in the West and their significance in frontier America."–David Dary, Overland Journal. "A superb contribution by a master historian, Union Pacific Country is a model chapter in the epic story of how the American West was penetrated, settled, and developed with the aid of steam and iron. The research is massive; the writing style is inviting; the photographs, maps, and documents are helpful; and the story is compelling."–Journal of the West. The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad: Rebel of the Rockies by Robert G. Athearn is also available. |

Forts of the Upper Missouri $4.23 This book brings to life one of the most exciting eras in American history. In late 1819 Colonel Henry Atkinson led an expedition to explore the wilderness of the Upper Missouri and establish sites for a string of military posts, which would extend successful contacts with the Indians as well as exploit trade with British companies. The result of his efforts was a fort system which played a dramatic and significant role in the opening of the territories of the upper plains and the Rockies. Robert G. Athearn was a leading authority on the history of the Northern Plains and the Rocky Mountains. |

Memories of Trains and Their People, Reminiscences of a Train Lover $14.06 This is a collection of the author’s fond memories of days spent in the company of trains — beginning with infant visits to NYC’s West Shore Line, PRR’s Clinton Street Station in Trenton, NJ with his aunt, teenage rail trips with his father and brief employment with NYC/PC. |

The Denver and Rio Grande Western Railroad: Rebel of the Rockies $9.1 Nowhere better than in the history of its railroads is the growth of the Old West revealed, and for Colorado the development of the Denver and Rio Grande Western epitomizes the changes that took place between 1870 and the present. Robert G. Athearn’s intimate knowledge of the West has enabled him to write a gripping account of the famous narrow-gauge Denver and Rio Grande as it inched its way south, then turned west into the Rockies. By f1883 it had joined with the Rio Grande Western to become Colorado’s only line across the mountains. The Dotsero Cutoff and the six-mile Moffat Tunnel put Denver on a transcontinental line for the first time. Twelve maps and fifty-five illustrations help tell the story. |

Pennsylvania Railroad $60 This book uses the contents of the official 1952 Pennsylvania RR passenger train consist book detailing the make-up of its east-west trains. The author supplements this data with a general introduction about PRR service of the period, and introduces each train with a description of its make-up, service, and cars used. Color photos illustrate many of the cars used in the era. B&W and Color photos show typical trains. Illustrations of menus and ads complete the book. |

Septa Regional Rail: Fox Chase Line, Keystone Corridor, Media-Elwyn Line, Fox Chase Rapid Transit Line, Schuylkill Valley Metro $23.98 Chapters: Keystone Corridor, R3, Fox Chase-Newtown Rapid Transit Line, R5, R8, R6, R7, R2, Schuylkill Valley Metro, Emd Aem-7, R1, Abb Alp-44, Swampoodle Connection, Great Valley Flyer. Source: Wikipedia. Pages: 106. Not illustrated. Free updates online. Purchase includes a free trial membership in the publisher’s book club where you can select from more than a million books without charge. Excerpt: The SEPTA Regional Rail Division provides commuter rail service on thirteen branches to over 150 active stations in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania and its suburbs. Service on most lines runs from 5:30 AM to midnight. The core of the Regional Rail system is the Center City Commuter Connection composed of three Center City stations in the "tunnel" corridor: the above-ground upper level of 30th Street Station; and the underground Suburban Station; and Market East Station. All trains stop at these Center City stations, and most also stop at Temple University station on the campus of Temple University in North Philadelphia. The 13 branches can be divided into those originally owned and operated by the Pennsylvania Railroad (PRR), which would become Penn Central, and those of the Reading Company. Before the Center City Commuter Connection opened in November 1984, the Pennsylvania Railroad commuter lines and the Reading commuter lines were two completely separate railroads. Each had a separate Center City terminal, with the Pennsylvania Railroad lines terminating at Suburban Station, while the Reading lines terminated at Reading Terminal. Reading Terminal was replaced by Market East Station, which is part of the Center City Commuter Connection and sits partially under the former Reading Terminal. The Center City Commuter Connection united the two systems by turning the two terminal stations into through-stations, resulting in a more efficient system with most inbound trains from one line continuing on as outbound trains on another line.
